And mills that produce kraft pulp have highly effi- cient recovery systems that capture and recycle about 97 percent of pulping chemicals (NCASI). Over the past 30 years, the U.S. industry has voluntarily bankrolled billions of dollars in recycling infrastructure, in- cluding $5 billion in investments announced or planned between 2019 and 2024. Today, 94 percent of Americans have access to a community paper recycling program, and 79 percent have access to residential/curbside recycling programs, this according to a comprehensive national study commissioned by AF&PA in 2021. Koenig & Bauer Makes Itself Independent Of Pipeline Gas
In view of an impending gas shortage, Koenig & Bauer has been working intensively in recent months on becoming independent of pipeline gas. As a result of these efforts, the process gas previously required for production will be fully substituted by the end of July 2022. In addition, the fuel supply for heating energy will be modified at the major production sites by September 1st, 2022. By adapting the infrastructure, pipeline gas will thus be replaced by an energy mix consisting of LPG, heating oil, and district heating, among others, before the start of the heating season. As a consequence of a restricted gas sup- ply, unforeseen fluctuations in the power grid cannot also not be ruled out. Koenig & Bauer has procured high-ca- pacity mobile emergency power units (NEA) which can be deployed as required. This means that Koenig & Bauer’s own production is largely secured at all European plants, even in the event of a Russian gas supply stoppage. Koenig & Bauer also continues to work on sustainable energy concepts, an effort that was started before the tense supply situation. The overriding goal is long-term in- dependence from fossil fuels and maximum self-sufficien- cy, particularly with regard to achieving the sustainability targets set by Koenig & Bauer itself and for maximum resil- ience to future fluctuations on the energy markets.
