Did you know that Mara Brock Akil, the creator of the show Girlfriends and The Game, is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.? Mara was initiated at Northwestern University and comes from a legacy of members. She is best known for capturing the voice of African American women while creating a lens for us to see friendships and womanhood lived on screen.

Recently, Mara started The Writers Colony , a screenwriting residency based in West Adams, Los Angeles, to cultivate diverse voices. During the residency, writers have an opportunity to develop an original script and will connect with entertainment professionals to prepare them to launch into the industry.
