EMPLOYEE OWNERSHIP MAKES A DIFFERENCE

5 Compelling Benefits to Consider For the sixth year in a row, the share price and value of Franklin Building Supply, the company you and your colleagues are 100% owners of, has increased. Let that sink in for a minute. Last year, the public stock market was down year over year. While I advocate strongly for diversified investments including 401(k), IRA, and long-term investment in the public stock market, we performed better, and I’m not surprised. Employee ownership makes a difference in the here and now and over the long term. Here’s what the statistics and research show about the difference employee-owned companies make compared to non- employee-owned companies: • Employee-owned companies, on average, perform better financially in terms of higher sales growth rates, higher profitability, better productivity, and higher long-term value. Why? Employees invest in themselves and reap the benefits of their investments over time.

• Employee-owned

companies, on average, have higher rates of

productivity and efficiency compared to non-employee- owned companies. Why? Employees have a direct stake in the outcome and are more motivated to work smarter, safer, and more efficiently. • Employee-owned companies, on average, are more innovative and adaptable. Why? Employees have more agency, ownership, and say in the decision-making process. • Employee-owned companies, on average, have higher rates of employee satisfaction and engagement. Why? Employees are more connected to each other and the company because their time is not just being rented, and they have an opportunity to build wealth through ownership. • Employee-owned companies, on average, last longer and are more stable. Why? Employees maintain a long-term perspective and have incentives for staying with the company for a decade or more, not just a few years. That’s a compelling list. As we celebrate employee ownership at locations throughout this summer, and bask in the glow of another year with a rising stock price and valuation, keep all these benefits in mind. These are reasons to stay, build a career, develop relationships, and bring the best you know to FBS to experience the same rewarding journey. Let’s finish these last six months of 2023 strong. Let’s run hard and invest in ourselves and each other to deliver exceptional outcomes and experiences for customers. Let’s keep each other safe and work diligently to put ourselves in a position to be proud of our performance given the backdrop of a challenging start to the year.

HIGH FIVES!

SAFE To: Pocatello Yard From: Kristine Coleman Everyone is always working hard while being aware of their surroundings and wearing that PPE!

STRIVE To: Louis Bourget, Boise From: Tyler Honn, Boise

GUIDE To: Robert Forbes From: Jerrid Brain

I would like to give a shoutout to Louis for showing our customer what being partners in the building industry looks like. Our customer had a Parade home, and they were not meeting their schedules. The metal stair rail was one of the last tasks and that fell to Louis to complete an impossible timeline. He was creative with figuring out solutions and communicated with the customer and vendor daily. Great job, Louis! That’s how you win over a customer for life!

I just wanted to send a huge shoutout and high five to Robert Forbes. I have been working on a commercial project for cabinets that was started with another salesperson. As we are working through our salesman worksheets, his communication and willingness to share knowledge and assistance helped immensely. It ensured the drafting and quoting were back to the customer in a timely manner and also helped me learn the worksheets better. I won’t (or shouldn’t) miss certain areas now because he took the time to explain certain nomenclature to use so we are all talking the same language and getting better. THANKS, ROBERT!

WOW To: Boise Yard Will-Call From: Tyler Honn

EASY To: Larry Rice From: Sierra Baker

Just got a text from Joe Lords with CBH. He had a will-call this afternoon and was extremely impressed with how fast they got his hanger and got him on the way. He called

Larry Rice went above and beyond to help a customer build a gate out of culled lumber from the yard. The customer was exceptionally impressed with Larry’s customer service. That customer will definitely be returning to Franklin.

it “Jimmy John’s fast.” Good job team!

MAKING BUILDING EASY One Improvement at a Time in Twin Falls

When the busiest time in our history came to an end last year, it showed. Our people were haggard, and our lumber yards were, too. Clutter was clogging our warehouses, labels were missing, and cleanup projects had been put on hold. Getting the job done was made more difficult by the obstacles left for another time. At the Twin Falls location, our folks decided to make their lives easier. The mountains of clutter getting in the way of having a productive day

being hidden by clutter. Sierra Baker, who works Inside Sales in Twin Falls, described how lean and safety go together: “Not only do you find the lean improvements, but you find the safety issues, too.” Sierra is seeing the benefits of an orderly work area in other ways, too. She said inventory counts go much faster, and customer service is quicker to respond in the yard. As the person in charge of stocking flooring, she can quickly see how much stock is on hand because it is all in one place. She says about the new process, “I can just look and go!” Our goal at FBS is to “Make Building Easy.” To do this, we improve the many steps it takes to serve the customer. This includes everything from stocking flooring to finding windshield wiper fluid in the truck shed. When it’s easier for us, it’s easier for the customer, too.

had to be sorted, returned to vendors, or thrown out. As John Moore, SCI Coordinator, described it, “You had to move 20 things to get one thing, and then you had to move those 20 things back!” The team started by fixing what bugged them. First, the supply sheds for trucks and forklifts were decluttered, and everything was given a designated spot and labeled. If anything is out of stock, it is easy to see. The supply sheds served as an example to the rest of the crew, and they applied the same ideas in different areas of the yard. In the process of cleaning up, we made some unexpected discoveries. Behind a pile of pallets, an exposed electrical wire was found, and in the workshop, some stain-soaked rags were waiting to ignite. After fixing these items, the crew is committed to preventing hazards from

In the Spotlight

Here at Franklin Building Supply, our team members mean so much to us, and Dathan Williams, a yard manager at our Elko, NV, location, is a prime example of that. In 2015, Dathan joined our team as a load builder at the Pocatello store. Two years later, life took him in a completely different direction. Dathan returned to the company in 2020 and chose to make Franklin Building Supply a career. Having Dathan with us for about five years in total has been wonderful — he is efficient, friendly, kind, caring, and great at his job. As the yard manager, he is constantly on the move and wears many hats as he navigates many roles. We like to joke that he is a dispatcher, load builder, receiver, and truck driver, all bundled up into one. He always puts our customers first — a quality we truly admire. “I love having a variety of roles to play,” Dathan tells us. “My friends and family always call me a jack of all trades, and I love that I can showcase that in my job. Making a difference in my yard team, the customers, and the store as a whole is in the foundation of everything I do.” Dathan has a wife and five children under the age of nine; he has five dogs, too! “My family is the thing that drives me the most,” Dathan says. “Supporting my kids in all of their endeavors and spending quality time with the wife and dogs is absolutely what gets me out of bed every day.” With this in mind (and likely because he used to be a police officer, too), safety is No. 1 for Dathan. He recognizes that coming home to his family every day after work is paramount and makes every effort to keep himself and his team safe. Proud That Dathan Chooses to Call Us ‘Home’ IN THE SPOTLIGHT

When Dathan isn’t working, he can be located at the golf course, playing D&D with his buddies, coaching his children in baseball, or going on adventures while making memories with his family. Dathan, we are beyond thankful to have you on our team! Thanks for choosing to make us your career home!
