A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 10

We were very proud of our Year 7 Prefects who successfully supported the new Year 7 forms on Monday when they visited for their taster day. Our prefects took their forms on a tour of the school and answered lots of questions throughout the visit. It was lovely to see the relationships developing between the new Year 7s and the prefects. Staff were equally complimentary on how kind and friendly our prefects were with the newcomers. Twelve students took part in the Money Wise challenge at London Excel last Friday 30 June. They competed against hundreds of other students from schools across London. Despite the competition being tough our Year 10 team of Chloe R, Ellie H and Helena M went on to win the Year 10 and 11 category. A huge congratulations to these students who were fantastic in representing Waldegrave. We are very proud of their achievement! Yesterday our DT students visited the New Designers Exhibition at the Business Design Centre. This gave them the opportunity to see specialist techniques using the latest technology and understand future pathways in the creative industry. I am sure lots of students were inspired to reflect this creativity through their coursework component. This week there was a very important message delivered to Year 10 in assembly which was on the importance of using reading for pleasure as a way to support wellbeing. There was a statistical fact which supported this in that reading for 6 minutes a day for a period of 10 weeks allows for a positive habit to be formed. Lots of interesting book read suggestions were shared to encourage students who may not have explored this strategy to get started.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

Killing God by Kevin Brooks Age recommendation 14+

The book features Dawn Bundy, a fifteen year old girl whose father claims to have found God, and leaves to continue his new, alternative lifestyle. The reader is led on an adventure with Dawn, which involves the struggles of friends and classmates. Kevin Brooks somehow manages to convey how young girls may feel about their bodies - specifically body dysmorphia - and describes their discomfort in their own skin. This book - to me - is very important. Killing God highlights many modern day problems for young people. It educates people and serves as a warning. ~ Recommended by Imogen C-A, Year 9 student
