How does your character change in relation to the new, younger doctors joining the story? - Young characters constantly remind him of what he used to be like. Their enthusiasm is contagious, but also dangerous. He sees their mistakes before they happen, because he made them himself. At the same time, he must learn to let them make mis- takes. That’s perhaps also the hardest part — realising that you can’t protect someone from everything. As an actor, what do you find most interesting about playing a character that’s already “matured” within the series? - The most interesting aspect is playing silence. When the char- acter no longer has to constantly say what he thinks. When emo- tions exist, but aren’t spoken about. That’s subtler acting, but also more demanding. You can’t hide behind drama. Everything has to be precise. Similarly, the more mature characters carry the consequenc- es of previous seasons, and that’s rich material to play with. The au- dience remembers. And you have to be aware of that continuity. How do you see the enduring popularity of medical dramas, and Grey’s Anatomy in particular? - At its essence, this show is about love, loss, ambition and the fear of failure. These are topics that never get old. Grey’s Anat- omy has survived because it has changed together with its audi- ence. The characters age, the world changes, but emotions remain the same. People come back because they feel seen. And that’s the greatest strength of this series. What’s it like to work on a series that has shaped television as we know it today? - That carries great responsibility, but also huge gratitude. I’m aware that I’m part of something that’s bigger than me. A cer- tain discipline exists on set, but also a sense of togetherness. Peo- ple know why they’re there. There is no chaos of improvisation — everything has its purpose. That gives you a sense of assuredness as an actor, while at the same time forcing you to always be better. Are you more of a TV show or movie guy? - Today’s TV shows offer me more space to develop characters. Film is intense, but short-lived. In a series, you have the oppor- tunity for your character to breathe, change, make mistakes and grow. That’s extremely important to me as an actor. I love that last- ing relationship with the character.
