T he fashion week cycle pre- senting Spring/Summer 2026 collections will be forever remembered for the number of designer “transfers” at the most prestigious fash- ion houses that preceded it. Some 15 brands received new creative directors, with the most highly anticipated debuts being those of Jonathan Anderson at Di- or and Matthieu Blazy at Chanel. De- spite such tectonic shifts in the fashion industry’s most luxurious sector – a sec- tor that has faced a host of market chal- lenges in recent seasons, the stylistic mood on the catwalks was surprising- ly upbeat. The fashion for spring 2026 presents
a softer side in many ways, with the in- clusion of romantic elements represent- ing escapism from the harsh reality of the world. Nowhere was this more ap- parent than in the penchant for frills: in lacy form at Chloé, as silk accessories on Louis Vuitton jackets and Givenchy’s sheer dresses. Margiela, McQueen and Schiaparelli all showed their fondness for frills, though the most striking (and memorable) example was that of YSL, where Anthony Vaccarello has created sumptuous, flowing dresses (based on Yves Saint Laurent’s Proust Ball gowns of the 1970s) worthy of any modern heroine.
