Combined Facilities Management (CFM) scooped the Training Award, sponsored by CITB NI, in another closely contested category at this year’s CEF Awards. The company’s commitment to growing and evolving team members and giving them the opportunity to showcase their talent was evident in their entry, with CFM’s focus on continuing to invest and expand its in-house Training Academy to support an overall strategy of attracting, developing and retaining staff and supply chain partners. In addition, CFM is one of 300 companies in the UK who have pledged to have a minimum of 5% of staff enrolled on an apprenticeship/graduate programme and are currently exceeding this target with 16% of staff on a structured apprenticeship route. Recognising the potential impact of Covid-19 on training at an early stage, CFM utilised the benefits of technology and maintained its training programme for team members and supply chain partners throughout the pandemic, ensuring that when work returned to full operation their staff and sub-contractors were equipped with the training needed to deliver. The judges said CFM’s entry clearly showed how they had embedded an organisational culture of training and ongoing development at all levels of the business, from new staff (both craft and professional) through to the Boardroom and noted that CFM can boast several senior managers who have developed their skills and abilities through training and peer mentoring within the company.

The Health & Safety Award, sponsored by CITB NI, went to GEDA Construction in what the judges agreed was a highly competitive category to decide. While we know the recent Covid-19 pandemic forced contractors to implement new measures to protect the health and safety of employees, GEDA not only implemented procedures above government guidelines for all 125 of its staff but also extended its focus to the wellbeing of the wider supply chain and community. The company’s leadership foresaw the importance of staff wellbeing from the outset of the pandemic and made it a key priority to implement a tailored approach to training (both mandatory and elective) that embraced technology to ensure accessibility and inclusivity. Every GEDA site was assessed with pandemic adjustments in mind to ensure the H&S and overall wellbeing of employees, supply chain, clients and community remained a consistent priority, with the company implementing robust protection protocols that included awareness training, clean down procedures, the installation of work partitions and the utilisation of drone technology to provide visual updates and minimise the number of personnel attending site. The Judges were impressed by GEDA’s clear demonstration of buy-in to their H&S procedures by all levels of staff as well as the validation of customer and stakeholder confidence, as they reorganised sites to meet the challenges of the pandemic.
