Here Comes the Sun

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of Sun Exposure

When a patient comes to see me, we talk a lot about beauty. It’s in our name: Beautique. As a medical spa, we help our clients achieve and maintain youthful-looking skin. We often talk about treatment and prevention of skin damage. Sometimes, these two go hand in hand, as is the case with sun exposure. Sun exposure comes with some benefits — we need a little sunlight to get Vitamin D. Vitamin D is an important hormone that our body needs to function, and it helps to fight off depression. But overexposure to the sun has many harmful side effects. Different types of UV rays, including UVA, UVB, and UVC, have different properties and can cause a variety of issues. Cancer is a major concern, as is cosmetic damage like wrinkles and sunspots. During consultations with patients, I often notice that they have more sun damage on the left side of their face than the right. I attribute that to the sun exposure you get while driving. UVA rays go through glass, so even if you are driving in the car with your windows up, the sun still gets through. You may not feel the heat, but you still get the exposure. Sometimes a patient will say, “I was out in the sun, and it was cloudy, but I still got a burn!” Yes, you can still get burned on a cloudy day. UV rays go right through the clouds, so even if you don’t see or feel them, your skin does. It’s important to protect your skin anytime you are outside, on sunny days and all the rest too. Fortunately, we live in a time when science and technology are helping us develop new and better formulas for protecting our skin. It’s easy to find a sunscreen that blocks UV rays from your skin. Jane Iredale makes a natural sunscreen, and it’s in a powder form so you don’t have to deal with any mess. You put a bit of the powder on and reapply as necessary. If you go in the water, you’ll need to find a waterproof sunscreen. Most brands of sunscreen only last for an hour or two, and then you’re no longer protected, so follow the instructions and reapply.

For the sensitive skin on your scalp, wear a hat to cover up. This can also protect your ears and shade your face. Sunglasses will also help protect the sensitive area around your eyes. Most people won’t notice any sun damage when they’re young and may not be thinking about how it will affect them later on in life. The problem is that when your skin is very damaged, those wrinkles and spots won’t go away. They are more troublesome to treat than they are to prevent. Enjoy the sun this summer, but not too much, and always wear sunscreen and the right type of coverage. As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

When Your Teen Wants TO START DATING Parents often feel pretty antsy when their teens want to date. It’s fun and exciting for the teen, but there are plenty of reasons for parents to worry. But don’t feel hopeless in this situation. Take the initiative to let your child know you’re there for them. Below are a few tips that can help keep your teen safe while respecting their individuality. Communication Open communication between you and your teen can help immensely. When your teen expresses an interest in dating, sit down and talk with them about it in a comfortable environment. It may be a little awkward, but letting your child know they can talk to you about dating will help them feel more at ease. Let your teen know they can always come to you, even if they have something unpleasant or uncomfortable to share. Rules on Dating When your teen starts to date, there’s nothing wrong with setting up a few rules. Putting an age restriction and a curfew in place is a good start. Come up with a time that both you and your teen can agree on. Deciding when your teen should date is a bit more complicated. If you believe your teen shows signs of maturity and you’re comfortable letting them date, now is a good time to start a conversation about it. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, teens should be allowed to have one-on-one dates sometime after the age of 16. Dr. Ron Eager, a pediatrician at Denver Health Medical Center, points out that there is an enormous difference between a 14-year-old and a 17-year-old in terms of life experience and maturity levels. Appropriate Date Spots If your teen seems unsure of where to go on a date, suggest some places you feel comfortable with. This is a good way to encourage safe and age-appropriate activities that both individuals can enjoy. Some possibilities include the zoo, a movie, dinner, bowling, ice skating, go-karting, or an amusement park. These kinds of activities encourage a comfortable, fun environment that may help ease nerves for both you and your teen. Creating a comfortable parent-child relationship that encourages a teen to turn to you for help and guidance is the first step toward keeping them as safe as you can.

LIGHTS, Peels, Action! YOUR TREATMENT PLAN FOR CLEAR SKIN

We’d like to put a spotlight on our guest relations manager, Marisol, who has undergone a few customized treatments from Beautique to address her acne. Before Beautique, Marisol struggled with acne and the scarring that can result from it. Fortunately, our estheticians were here to show her the way to clear, renewed skin. After working with her esthetician to find the right formulas, Marisol was ready to start the next step on her clear-skin journey. To help further repair and promote renewal, we focused on light- therapy treatments, laser treatments, and facial peels. These also help prevent further breakouts for Marisol. Light therapy is a great option for acne-prone skin and scarring because it stimulates the skin’s natural ability to rejuvenate itself. Plus, it promotes collagen production, so you get an anti-aging boost too! Here’s a look at the customized treatments we used for Marisol. LED Facial Marisol had LED Therapy at least twice a week. This is a colored light therapy used for different types of skin issues. Namely, blue- light therapy kills acne-causing bacteria without damaging the skin any further.

Peels There are many options, and we always customize them to our client’s skin. For Marisol, we started off with some gentle peels, which are the ideal starting point for clients who have never had a peel before. These treatments remove dead skin cells gently and

stimulate cell regeneration. Laser Hair Removal

We don’t always think of acne when it comes to hair removal, but did you know that plucking and waxing can cause deep-rooted breakouts? With Laser Hair Removal, many see improvements in their acne because it eliminates ingrown hairs without irritation and helps to reduce oil and inflammation. Intense Pulsed Light When you’ve dealt with acne for many years, what’s left — the scars — can be as frustrating as the acne itself. Intense Pulsed Light is one of THE best ways to even out skin discoloration and erase acne scars. IPL targets pigment cells and treats hyperpigmentation. We also used the acne settings to make sure that we were killing the specific acne bacteria that wreaks such havoc on your skin. Our estheticians are pros at putting together a customized plan for your skin. Contact Beautique Medical Spa today to schedule your appointment!

Salma Hayek Reveals Her Beauty Secrets

In addition to being an Oscar-nominated actress and producer, Salma Hayek has also created her own skincare line, so the woman has some insight into the topic of beauty, and she’s become known for defining it on her own terms. “People often say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder,’” Hayek has said. “And I say that the most liberating thing about beauty is realizing that you are the beholder.” After coming to the U.S. from Mexico, Hayek struggled against being typecast in small roles until director Robert Rodriguez took notice of her talent and cast her in his films. She went on to bring the film “Frida” to the big screen; it was a longtime dream of hers that earned her an Oscar. Despite being admired for her acting skills and appearance, Hayek is no stranger to the days of not being happy with how we look. “We all have those moments,” Hayek says, “and then we also have those moments of ‘Wow, I’m not so bad today.’” When her daughter, Valentina, began to express concern over her beauty, Hayek had a new perspective to share with her. “I said to her, ‘You are hurting Beauty’s feelings. You have to be nice to her,’” explains Hayek. And the mindset shift worked on Valentina, who is now careful to make “Beauty” feel good.

In an interview with The New York Times, Hayek revealed some of the other beauty secrets that help her look and feel her best every day. 1. She swears by her masseuse. Her masseuse travels from Japan to give Hayek invigorating facial massages. “Her technique requires four hands, so there are two people working on you.” 2. She doesn’t eat meat every day. Though she doesn’t follow a strict diet plan, she does keep her meat intake to a minimum. “I eat all kinds of meat, but I consume it sparsely. Sometimes I go several days without eating meat.” 3. Salma cleanses her face in the evening but not in the morning. “My grandmother taught me that at night your skin replenishes all the things you lost during the day.”
