PURPOSES OF THE TRANSFIGURA TION Matt. 17:1-9 1. To counteract the disciples’ doubts. This is connected with the first men- ' tion of His suffering and death (16:21-27). To help them rise to a true conception of the dignity of His person as Son of God and Savior of the world. 3. To show heaven’s estimate of the atonement (Lk. 9:31). His decease was the all-absorbing theme in heaven. His passion must precede His glory. 4. To show the spiritual harmony be tween His teachings and those of the law and propehts. The burden of the message of Moses and the prophets had been His atoning death (Lk. 24:27, 44). 6. To testify of the supremacy of Jesus a s a teacher. “ Hear ye Him.” Moses and. Elijah fade out of sight. The old covenant is subordinate to the new. 6. To give a glimpse of what He will be at His coming. 2 Pet- 1:16-17; Matt. 25:31. 7.
