Welcome to Prime Maternal , Last year Red Angus breeders from across the country gathered in Jane Lew, West Virginia with Cedar Hill, and friends, to appraise a functional, low input, high profit set of females. Over the past 12 months we have received extremely posi- tive feedback from the folks who invested in our genetics and put those females to work in their programs. So, we’ve had to dig deep into our respective programs to make the 2025 version of Prime Maternal our best yet! This 2025 version of Prime Maternal features not only the superior cow herd building traits folks have come to expect from our programs but equally elite end product traits. From start to finish you’ll find elite Red Angus genetics, capa- ble of producing higher quality grade, faster rate of gain, heavier pay-weight and more efficient feed conversion and ultimately greater Profitability. I n fact, this entire offering averages top 10% for Fertility, top 10% for $Profit, 11% for GridMaster index, and 11% for $Ranch. R.A. Brown Ranch held their 51th annual sale on October 8 th ; the next day Cedar Hill Farm had their trailers loaded with bulls and females to deliver to cow/calf producers in the southeast and mid-Atlantic regions. The Stickels joined the R.A.Brown Ranch cooperator team in 2001, and now have made over 24 years of cumulative genetic contributions to the R.A Brown Ranch program. Our collective relationship with the Brown family has provided economical access for local producers to one of the nation’s elite seedstock programs. As you study the pedigrees of the females in Prime Maternal , notice the stacked generations of sires that not only impacted the R.A. Brown Ranch program but helped build the breed. The females selling in Jane Lew, West Virginia on November 1 st are the dams, daughters and sisters of some of the high selling bulls and most influential sires. Perhaps even more importantly these females are adapted to this environment with it’s higher humidty, “washier” pastures and endophyte fescue. Join us at Cedar Hill Farm in Jane Lew, WV on Saturday, November 1 st . We’re sharing some of our highest MPPA produc- ers, elite profitability indexes, and front pasture phenotype, and to a large extent, we presented the cattle in their work- ing clothes. What you see is what you’ll have early next spring when calves start hitting the ground. Your investment will be in genetics, not extra fat cover or fitting. In short, you’ll find females that have been designed to further Red Angus’ leadership role by providing genetics to enhance beef industry profitability. Please let us know if you have any questions about the cattle or need assistance with travel arrangements, or participating in the auction on-line via DV Auction. Dan & Alicia

FERT (Cow Fertility) Predicts differences in the number of calves produced by bulls' daughters by the time they reach the age of 8 years. Daughters from a bull with a 2.0 FERT EPD would be expected to produce on average, one more calf by the time they reach 8 years of age than daughters from a bull with a 1.0 FERT EPD.
Feed:Gain (F:G) EPD that predicts differences in the amount of feed an animal’s progeny will consume to produce one pound of gain. EXAMPLE:
GridMaster - Newly formulated Red Angus Index that Predicts profitability in the feedlot and carcass phases.
Bull A = -.50 F:G EPD Bull B = 0.0 F:G EPD
We’d expect Bull A’s progeny to consume 1/2 pound less feed per pound of gain.
Breeding/Calf at Side Data - Describes service sire and due dates for bred females or tattoo, sex, date of birth and sire for baby calves at the side of fall calving cows.
We understand the expense side of the Beef Industry’s Profit equation... For over two decades we’ve partnered with R.A. Brown Ranch to test Cedar Hill genetics in some of the largest and most progressive cow/calf operations in the Southern Plains and throughout the Gulf Coast regions. That
relationship has provided opportunities to have our sires enrolled in structured progeny carcass tests, collection of feed intake data, foot and docility scores and utilization of $Profit economic selection indices and Feed Efficiency EPDs. This commitment to measuring all economically relevant traits combined with feedback from such great ranchers ensures that our Red Angus are meeting customers’ phenotypic demands while meet- ing their genetic goals.

• Here’s one of the fanciest heifer calves in the entire offering and she dominates the Profit indices for both Cow/Calf and Post-weaning traits. Her first calf heifer dam has done everything right, bred A.I., as a heifer, calved unassisted and weaned off the Lot 5 Ideal heifer calf at a 104 weaning ratio, then bred back on her first AI service. Ranchmaster daughters are known for sound foot and udder structure, and Lot 5a is one of our best, and she comes with a Titus heifer baby in her belly.

You might just want to double your money and take both - that’s the only way to be assured of getting the best one. This highly fertile dam is not only bred back to drop another Titus calf, but she should move up a month in doing so. That calf in her belly could be your next herd sire or donor dam.

High Fertility EPD bulls will build cow herds with consistently better breed back and deliver a higher percentage of calves to the weaning pen. Higher Fertility also lowers cow herd culling requirements which reduces replacement rates; which in turn reduces cow herd depreciation costs and provides a larger percentage of the heifer calves that can be sold. As you would imagine, these more desirable outcomes drive HUGE differences in profitability, so the Fertility EPD has tremendous impact on $Profit and $Ranch. The Sale Catalog Data Explanation on the top of page 6 shows where the FERT EPD is presented in the sale catalog. The example below is useful for better understanding the trait units of the FERT EPD. FERT EPD Example: Bull A has a FERT EPD of 2.5 Bull B has a FERT EPD of 1.1 1.4 We would expect the daughters of Bull A to produce on average 1.4 more calves over their first 8 years of production than the daughters of Bull B.

• This “cover girl” is a prototype Red Angus female. She’s built to last with sound udder, good footed, moderate framed and easy fleshing. Her Titus calf is a chip off the ol’ block, only with just a bit more performance and natural thickness. This pair is a tough choice, you might just want to keep the family together and build a cow herd around this front-pasture family.

• Ever had to pick between two sisters? If you never saw a Cedar Hill brood cow, these two sisters will give you an idea of what the whole herd looks like, incredi - bly deep, wide sprung and easy fleshing. We like the type of cattle that stay in great body condition on little more than scenery and that’s just what these two girls bring ot the table. When you study these two you’ll realize there is no “wrong” choice, but the best choice might be “Both” when the auctioneer asks which one you want.

$Profit Developed for operations that raise their own replacements and retains owner- ship on steers and cull heifers, which are marketed on a Quality Based Grid. $Profit assumes a bull will sire 100 progeny over his useful lifespan. $Profit Combines all the traits that comprise both $Ranch and $Feeder to yield one number that predicts Ranch- • Bull A has a $Profit of $15,000 • Bull B has a $Profit of $10,000 = We would expect Bull "A" to pro- duce an additonal $5000 of profit to the ranch over his service life ($50 per calf x 100 calves) when com- pared to Bull "B". Multi-generational use of $Profit will move both $Ranch and $Feeder in a positive direction, just not as fast as the singular use of $Ranch or $Feeder. ers' Bottom Lines. $Profit Example:
$Ranch Developed for cow/calf producers who retain their own replacements and market 100% of the steer calves and cull heifers after weaning. Traits included in $Ranch : Fertility, Milk, Weaning Growth, Cow Herd Feed Intake and Mature Cow Size $Ranch Example: = We would expect Bull "A" to produce $40 per head increased profit when compared to bull "B" in a cow/calf operation that raised their own replacements and sold all other calves at weaning. • Bull A has a $Ranch of $80 • Bull B has a $Ranch of $40 Multi-generational use of $Ranch will ul- timately result in: moderation in mature cow size, improved fertility, modest gains in weaning weight, improved stocking rates and ultimately - increased pounds of calf harvested per unit of feed/land resource.
$Feeder Developed to compare how bulls will impact profitability in the post-weaning
phase (weaning to harvest). Traits included in $Feeder :
Feed Intake, Post-Weaning Gain, Carcass Weight, Quality Grade (Marbling), Yield Grade $Feeder Example: = We would expect calves sired by Bull "B" to earn $50 per head increaded profit between weaning and harvest when compared to calves sired by bull "A". • Bull A has a $Feeder of $100 • Bull B has a $Feeder of $150 Use of $Feeder in sire selection will maximize Feedlot Closeouts, but with no regard for the cow herd. Thus $Feeder should be used by herds that purchase their replacement females.
