A CHAMPION FOR REPRESENTATION Attorney Katie Harris's Passion for Supporting Women

for some time. After a while, I decided I wanted to try working in private practice — I was finally ready to come out from behind the scenes.

I had an interview at a large private firm where the interview style involved meeting with each partner, of which there were several. The interview went well until I met with one male partner who said something like, "Women have to work harder than men in this industry, it's a reality and expectation." This statement floored me, and even now, when I play it back in my head, I wish I had been the type of person who said that expectation was grossly unfair, and that if I was going to work harder and put in more hours while making a salary the same as (or lower than) my male colleagues doing the same job, then this position wasn't for me. But I didn't, and in the end, I didn't get the job; they went with a male attorney for the role. After this experience, I knew I wouldn't be happy in an environment that openly accepted inequality. And while more women are in the legal field now, they are still vastly underrepresented. So, when I got into personal injury law and became involved with the Ohio Association for Justice, I learned about the Women's Caucus they had and realized a couple of things. The first was an opportunity to use this forum as a safe space for other women in the legal field to share stories and challenges like mine as well as a place to lift each other up and celebrate each other's accomplishments. The second was that I wanted to be a role model for other girls and women who aspire to enter the legal field, something I never had. There was a paralegal at a firm I previously worked for who wanted

In third grade, my parents took me on a trip to Washington, D.C. While there, we bought two books that would have a significant impact on my life: one about every president and the other — arguably the more important of the two — about every first lady. And as I read these books repeatedly, I thought, "I would make a great first lady one day." It wasn't until years later that I realized even in childhood daydreams I was limiting myself to the supporting role.

to become a lawyer, so I helped her study and apply to law school. She went on not only to get a full scholarship, but to also graduate highly in her class and is now an incredible attorney. I am proud of being there for her and supporting her in achieving her dream of entering the legal field, and I want to continue doing this for others.

My daydream of wanting to do something important morphed into the idea of becoming a lawyer when I was in middle school, but just like the role of a first lady, I wanted to be the type of lawyer that operated from behind the scenes. I was a pretty quiet kid and could never see myself standing in front of a courtroom talking to a jury. So, after completing college, I decided to attend law school. I passed the bar and became an attorney working for the courts

AND WHILE MORE WOMEN ARE IN THE LEGAL FIELD NOW, THEY ARE STILL VASTLY UNDERREPRESENTED.

MOTORCYCLE SAFETY AWARENESS MONTH Helpful Tips to Prevent Motorcycle Accidents

Physical therapists aim to help you return to your regular lives with few to no restrictions. Whether you suffered an injury or have recently undergone surgery, you’re doing everything possible to return to the activities you love. But you may not realize that your mental health can majorly impact your physical recovery. You might think you need to see a mental health professional or start a new prescription to help your mind during recovery, but that’s not necessarily the case. Often simply participating in physical therapy can help improve your mental health. REDUCED STRESS, ANXIETY, AND DEPRESSION Physical therapists aim to help you return to your regular lives with few to no restrictions. There may be moments when you feel like nothing will improve after an injury, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel! After meeting with a physical therapist, you’ll receive a road map to your recovery. When you see that things will eventually improve, you’ll notice improvements in your mental health. Feelings of stress, THE CONNECTION BETWEEN MENTAL HEALTH AND PHYSICAL THERAPY SAFETY TIPS FOR MOTORCYCLISTS Every biker understands that choosing to ride a motorcycle comes with inherent risks. There are no airbags, seat belts, windshields, or walls to block them in the event of a crash. That's why performing the following safety measures before you ride is essential to help yourself stay safe. Wear the right gear. Many motorcyclists love to ride their bikes because of the freedom it provides — the wind in their hair and their T-shirt ballooning in the wind on a warm summer day. However, if you're in an accident, that head of hair or stylish T-shirt won't do anything to protect your body. That's why it's important to wear the proper gear, like a full- For roughly 414,000 Ohio residents, riding a motorcycle is an activity that brings joy, freedom, and a thrill all in one package. But as liberating as riding a motorcycle feels, it can also be incredibly dangerous. In 2021 alone, there were 4,005 accidents involving motorcycles in Ohio, 223 of which were fatal. In honor of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, here are some important tips that motorcyclists and four-wheeled drivers can use to ensure safety while driving on the road.

faced helmet, boots that cover your ankles, an abrasion-resistant jacket, long pants or jeans, and gloves.

Check the weather and know your limits. Sure, you may be comfortable riding in some light rain or snow, but these weather conditions change quickly. Maybe the rain is light when you enter the grocery store or make it to your buddy's house, but it might be a torrential downpour or heavy snow when you leave. So before you go, check the weather for your ride there and back. If it looks like the weather will be worse on your ride home, don't try and risk it by "leaving early." Take the car and arrive home safely. SAFETY TIPS FOR OTHER VEHICLES One of the most common responses of four-wheeled drivers involved in motorcycle accidents is, "I didn't even see them!" Motorcycles are small, so they can easily fit into blind spots. So, the biggest thing you can do to help keep motorcyclists safe is to check your blind spots by looking over your shoulder, not just using your mirror. Next, be sure always to use turn signals and slow down before left turns to give motorcycle riders an ample amount of warning time.

anxiety, and depression will gradually lessen as you continue on your healing journey.

IMPROVED SELF-ESTEEM Unsurprisingly, your self-esteem may take a hit after suffering an injury or losing mobility, but physical therapy can help restore lost confidence. You will run through various exercises, and at every appointment, you’ll gain a new sense of achievement as you progress toward your goals and regain mobility. Your confidence will improve even more as you work on the exercises you're assigned at home.

BETTER SLEEP When you don’t sleep well, you can experience worsening symptoms of depression and anxiety. There's no better way to ensure you get a good night's rest than by exercising, and that's exactly what physical therapy will help you do. Whether you're going in for

an appointment or are following the guidelines for recovery at home, you’ll have an easier time falling asleep at night and will get much better rest.

SUPPORTING OUR LOCAL HEROES 3 Ways to Thank First Responders When danger arises and we need help, we call 911 and alert first responders. Every day, thousands of first responders put themselves in harm's way to protect the lives of civilians in their community. At Tittle & Perlmuter, we want to thank our first responders for always going above and beyond to keep us safe. That's why we're celebrating EMS Week (May 21–27) and International Firefighters’ Day (5/4) this month by sending food to our local stations to give our first responders a warm meal for the night.

Since this realization, I have spent the last two years as the chair of that Women's Caucus, and I am so proud of the support our members lend each other, both personally and professionally. I'm so excited to see how many more women in the legal industry this group can impact. More than anything, I’d like people to encourage girls and young women to go for the positions they want instead of feeling forced to stay behind the scenes. Certainly, things are better now than they were 25 years ago when I got those President and First Lady books in D.C., but encouraging girls to be true to themselves, to shine as brightly as they can, and giving them a nudge to help their confidence when they need it will continue building a world where all kinds of jobs, including law , are filled with bright, talented women who bring with them a whole set of unique life experiences and perspectives that can make every profession stronger.

But you may wonder how you can thank first responders and show them you care in your own way. And you don't need to wait for a holiday to do it, either. Showing first responders

they're in your thoughts will go a long way, no matter what time of year it is. So, if you're looking for ways to thank first responders in your town or community, here are three easy ways to show your gratitude. NO. 1: COOK A MEAL. You can take a recipe from the Tittle & Perlmuter playbook and cook a homemade meal for your local station too! Day-to-day life as a first responder can be stressful, along with irregular schedules and long hours, so finding time to enjoy a home-cooked meal can be few and far between. Plus, if you drop the meal off yourself, you can also include a note of thanks and a personal message! NO. 2: SEND A GIFT BASKET. Suppose you don't have time to cook a meal or are unsure how to satisfy everyone's meal preferences. In that case, a gift basket can be a great alternative. You can customize the basket yourself by adding gift cards to local restaurants or grab-and-go snacks that first responders can bring along in their vehicles with them. NO. 3: SEND A "THANK YOU" LETTER. It's true what they say that it's the thought that counts. Sometimes, all it takes is letting someone know you appreciate them with a message from the heart. You can even gather letters from friends, family, and neighbors and send them together for an even bigger impact. Whatever method you choose, your kind words, supplies, gifts, or food will make a big difference. For some first responders, your kind gesture may turn a bad night into something more positive!
