3 NATIONAL PARKS OUR FAMILY’S VACATION OF A LIFETIME

Our family loves the great outdoors, so when Karisa’s mom invited us, along with Karisa’s siblings and all the grandkids, to stay at a vacation rental in St. George and visit Zion National Park, we found it hard to resist. Over the course of four days, we saw what must be, in my opinion, some of the most beautiful places God

The next day, we moved our party to Zion National Park. There’s a little more greenery here than at Bryce Canyon, which gives the landscape a more colorful look. We hiked to some beautiful waterfalls on the first day, but it was the second day when we

saw the group’s favorite attraction: the Narrows. These are the slim canyons where a small river runs almost wall to wall. The weather was cool, and the hike was incredible. National Geographic listed the Narrows as the No. 5 Best

Adventure in America, and we can see why.

created. Our kids got caught up in the majesty and grandeur of God’s creation, and there were many moments where our mouths dropped in awe of what we were seeing. Karisa’s sister, Erin, made a scouting trip to the area in March, and had the trip mapped out to maximize our time and accommodate the 16 of us, including nine kids under the age of 13. Erin is working towards her goal of visiting all 59 national parks in the U.S., which is what started the idea of a trip to Zion.

On Thursday, our family checked America’s most famous national park off the list: the Grand Canyon. No one in our family had seen it, and even though we saw the

less-traversed Northern Rim, we all agreed the canyon has earned its name. The Grand Canyon is over a mile deep in some spots and up to 18 miles wide. After spending another day in Las Vegas (swimming at the hotel pool again, seeing the fountains at the Bellagio, and the fire show at the Mirage), we went home worn out, though we were buoyed by the memories of the natural beauty we had seen as a family. Most of all, we arrived grateful to God for creating such a world and with a refreshed appreciation of our wide-open spaces and big blue skies of the great plains. It was the trip of a lifetime. Of course, we’re already thinking about what national park we’d like to hit next. What do you recommend? Feel free to tell us your favorite — or about any trip you took with your family this month — when you come into the office!

We flew into Las Vegas — it was 112 degrees when we arrived, a big change from the 70 degrees we left in San Diego. The kids were excited to head to the hotel swimming pool after a stop at In-N-Out Burger. Swimming is always the kids’ favorite part of every vacation.

The next morning, we drove to Bryce Canyon National Park early enough to beat the heat (we ended up having record-breaking temps the entire time!) During the day, temperatures stayed in the triple digits. Luckily we found shade from the hot sun along the beautiful canyon trails. The gorgeous bluffs and expansive sunset- colored vistas blew us away.

Happy trails!

TESTED WHILE YOU SLEEP HOW TAKE-HOME SLEEP APNEA TESTING CHANGED THE GAME

This article is part of our series on sleep apnea. At Hart Dental, we want to improve your quality of life through better sleep! If you have any questions about our sleep apnea services, give us a call at 605-996-0650.

and a pretty steep bill, and that’s just to get tested. Now, thanks to state-of-the-art technology, we can determine how your respiratory system functions while you sleep in the comfort of your own home. In order to determine if you suffer from sleep apnea, you obviously have to be tested while you’re asleep. This normally means spending an expensive night in a hospital, where doctors hook you up to machines that monitor your breathing. We now offer a noninvasive test, often covered by medical insurance, where you take home a simple compact monitoring system that will monitor your breathing, sleep position, and oxygen levels among other important data. The best part is that you go to sleep when and where you normally would! The next morning, you return the device to our office. We upload the data and send it to a board certified sleep physician, who will determine if you have sleep apnea, the severity, and any course of action needed for treatment. The data recorded can be submitted for any medical purpose, and you don’t have to visit multiple locations to receive your diagnosis. Together, we can determine the best course of action to treat your apnea and help you have a restful, refreshing sleep every single night — no hospital stay required.

In the past, diagnosing sleep apnea has been a long, expensive chore. You had little comfort, zero privacy, a bad night of sleep,

HOW HEART HEALTH IS LINKED TO

PERIODONTAL DISEASE

A recent study published in the journal Infection and Immunity further confirmed the link between periodontal disease and heart health. Many patients somehow disassociate their oral health from their overall health, but the two are inextricably connected, which means you need to make sure your mouth is being taken care of! A Swedish team of investigators at the Department of Clinical Medicine in the School of Health Science at Orebro University studied this phenomenon, finding that periodontitis is linked to heart disease because of a specific pathogen called Porphyromonas gingivalis. This pathogen actually causes changes in gene expression, which boosts both inflammation and atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) in aortic smooth muscle cells. In other words, the pathogen that’s proliferated by periodontal disease has a direct impact on heart health! P. gingivalis has been found in the coronary artery plaques of heart attack patients, like a criminal hanging around the scene of the crime. And in animal models, researchers have seen P. gingivalis cause and accelerate the formation of atherosclerosis in the heart.

Allowing periodontal disease to go untreated can lead to serious complications that affect your overall health. According to the American Academy of Periodontology, people with periodontal disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary artery disease.

So, if you have bleeding, tender or inflamed gums, it’s a good idea to get the situation scoped out by your dentist. While periodontal

disease clearly causes pain and discomfort in the mouth, it has even more life-threatening effects to contend with if you’re not careful. Prevention is key, so nip those

periodontal problems in the bud!

As problematic as bad oral health is, it’s important to realize that the mouth doesn’t exist independently of the rest of the body.

Barbecue on a Budget

DIY RUBS AND SAUCES Don’t waste money on premade barbecue rubs when you likely have all the ingredients in your spice cabinet. Barbecue sauce is also simple to make — and much healthier when you know what’s in it. Check out these recipes that work wonders on grilled foods. Rub: In a bowl, combine 1/3 cup paprika, 1/3 cup dark brown sugar, ¼ cup kosher salt, 4 teaspoons ground mustard, 2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper, 2 teaspoons ground coriander seed, 1 tablespoon dried oregano, 1 tablespoon garlic powder, and 1 tablespoon onion powder. Sauce: In a saucepan over medium-low heat, combine 1 cup chicken broth, ½ cup ketchup, ¼ cup dark molasses (plus more to taste), 1 small onion, grated or diced, 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce, 1 tablespoon brown mustard, 2 tablespoons cider vinegar (plus more to taste), 2 teaspoons hot sauce (plus more to taste), and 2 tablespoons spice rub. Sprinkle on meats and vegetables. Really, it’s that easy.

Nothing says summer quite like gathering around the grill for a delicious meal with friends and family. If you’re not careful, though, your summer barbecue can end up putting a big dent in your wallet. You don’t need to break the bank to host an awesome get- together. Here are a few money-saving tips for your next cookout. MAKE SMART PROTEIN CHOICES Meat is the most expensive food you’ll purchase. You can save a lot, however, if you make smart choices at the butcher counter. Not only are chicken thighs and legs cheaper than boneless breasts, but they’re also less likely to dry out. Flank and skirt steak are great alternatives to pricier cuts of beef. If you want some seafood on the menu, buy what’s fresh and on sale. DON’T FORGET TO GRILL SOME VEGGIES Your grill isn’t just for searing meat. Vegetables, from corn and asparagus to zucchini, are delicious when cooked over a flame, and they are cheap and readily available during the summer. In addition to filling stomachs for a lot less, you’ll add some options for vegetarians and health- conscious eaters. MINIMIZE WASTE If you’re not careful, a lot of your barbecue budget will end up in the trash — or evaporating into thin air. Ditch the disposable plates and utensils in favor of cheap, reusable options. Another common waste is fuel overuse, whether that’s charcoal or gas. If you have a gas grill, turn off the propane as soon as possible. If you use charcoal, you don’t need to dump a full 10-pound bag into the grill. A few pounds should do the job just fine.

Simmer and whisk until sauce coats the back of a spoon. You can store cooled sauce in your fridge for months after your party.

Follow these tips, and you’ll shrink the cost of your summer cookout. Spending an afternoon by the grill is a summer tradition, but it doesn’t need to end with your money going up in smoke.
