Caring for Our Community Since 2002 While not everyone knows about World Physical Therapy Day, it’s actually been a holiday since 1996. The World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT) first created the day to commemorate when the organization was formed in 1951. World Physical Therapy Day also celebrates physical therapy’s contribution to communities around the globe. This year focuses on osteoarthritis and how physiotherapy has become an excellent treatment for patients in pain. When it comes to osteoarthritis, our team has had our fair share of experience. The Focus Physical Therapy team has been treating osteoarthritis of the knee, ankle, shoulder, spine, and more ever since we first opened in 2002. Since then, we’ve treated hundreds, if not thousands, of patients with osteoarthritis! We understand the pain that comes along with this condition and how it can genuinely affect your everyday life and activities. That’s why we always want to help patients treat their osteoarthritis, relieve their discomfort, and avoid intensive surgery. Of course, we also have supported those who had to undergo surgery with post-operation recovery programs. Post-surgery rehab is vital for those recovering from knee or hip replacements, the two most common surgeries we’ve seen in our osteoarthritis patients. While surgery is a significant help for these patients, physical therapy is just as crucial to regain mobility and the ability to do everyday tasks. If someone were to undergo one of these operations without physical therapy, they might never regain complete mobility, including walking, squatting, and much more. As a result of this decreased movement, there will only be more joint issues down the road. I’m not just tooting my own horn when I say that our work is paramount for our patients! Why We Do What We Do

Of course, I couldn’t do nearly as much without the help of my fantastic team of physical therapists here at our clinic. While we all have varied backgrounds, we share one commonality: the need to see our patients succeed. We always have each other whenever we need another pair of eyes or a fresh perspective. This clinic works in a collaborative effort at all times, and we have weekly meetings where we can help one another strategize and create the best treatment plans possible. I’m constantly surprised at just how driven and passionate this team is! While we may be osteoarthritis experts, we have helped patients with countless other conditions, injuries, and physical issues. Physical therapy can become a lifeline for numerous individuals restricted by pain or injuries. Movement is medicine, and the moment somebody stops moving, they begin to lose the function of their bodies. That’s why I always take pride in what I do and fully understand the importance of the care I bring to my patients. As a physical therapist, I get the unique experience of building close connections with my patients, who I see weekly. Unlike other medical providers who see patients monthly or yearly, I get to keep close tabs on them and watch as they progress toward their goals. I think any physical therapist can agree that nothing feels more fulfilling than seeing a patient who came to you in a wheelchair or crutches leave your clinic to go hiking or play pickleball! I want to thank our patients for putting their trust in us and share my gratitude for all the physical therapists who keep their community on their feet!

You’ve heard from your doctors, family, and friends alike how important movement is for individuals as they age. Regular walking is the best way for many older adults to get that daily movement in. But what if going for a walk is easier said than done? That’s why many older adults who suffer from balance and/or mobility issues are partaking in something called Nordic walking or pole walking. WHAT IS NORDIC WALKING? Nordic walking is when an individual uses two chest-height poles, much like ski poles, while pushing each one into the ground with

depression. And since users of Nordic walking typically walk outdoors, they also enjoy the mental benefits of being around nature. WHERE CAN YOU FIND NORDIC WALKING POLES? The most accessible place to find Nordic walking poles is online. Retailers like Amazon and Bass Pro Shops sell the poles, but a great resource is YorkNordic.com America’s No. 1 Nordic walking pole retailer. If you prefer to shop in person, Target, Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and athletic stores typically carry poles too. If you’d like more information on Nordic walking, you can always search the term on Google or YouTube for tips and tricks on starting the habit!

every step. The benefit of the poles is that they help the user balance and stand straight, while the act of pushing the poles into the ground actually increases upper body strength and flexibility. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF NORDIC WALKING? Aside from helping with balance, strength, and mobility, Nordic walking touts a few other health benefits users can enjoy. • Low Impact: Since Nordic walking uses poles to support the body through each step, there is much less impact on the joints and ligaments.

Reduces Joint Pain: Because Nordic walking poles help the body balance, the user’s joints

WHAT OUR PATIENTS ARE SAYING ...

The biggest compliment you can give us is referring friends and family. Thank you for all of your referrals and keep them coming! We love our clients!

“Completely satisfied and rehabilitated! The attention of all the staff is excellent, without a doubt an extraordinary place to improve the mobility of my hand. Thank you!” –Gabriela B. “Before PT, my neck would hurt even with simple stretching. On bad days, the pain would radiate down my right arm and make my job more difficult (i.e., computer work). I had to wear a brace during these times. The pain would wake me up at night, and putting on makeup was painful. Today, I have no more bad days, haven’t had to wear a brace in a long time, and don’t have trouble sleeping, and putting on makeup is a lot less painful. I will continue my exercises and will see a PT in Colorado. Thank you!” –Leticia V.

Unsteadiness Muscle cramps

Uncontrollable burping or nausea

While peripheral neuropathy might not be the most well-known condition, it can be debilitating for the nearly 20 million people in the U.S. who have it. While peripheral neuropathy is often not life-threatening, it can take a toll on a person and how they manage their daily life. Issues like trouble balancing, decreased feeling in your limbs, or frequent pain can make regular movements, even a simple motion like walking, a challenge. Additionally, there are different types of peripheral neuropathy (nearly 100 different types), depending on the affected nerves. However, they are usually put into three different categories: motor, sensory, or autonomic. Motor Neuropathy Nerves affected by motor neuropathy signal muscle movement to the brain. This type of peripheral neuropathy usually includes muscle weakness and involuntary movement. Some symptoms of motor neuropathy are: • Muscle twitching • Muscle weakness • Loss of muscles or shrinking

Bloating

Dizziness from low blood pressure Problems with high blood pressure Excessive sweating or not at all

Sensory Neuropathy Your sensory nerves help your brain notice sensations like pain, temperature, and touch. With sensory neuropathy, you will most likely experience some level of numbness or discomfort when there shouldn’t be. Signs to look out for include: • Hypersensitivity or “pins and needles” feeling • Decreased feeling in limbs • Increased pain or trouble sensing pain • Trouble maintaining balance • Pain like burning or pricking that is more prominent at night Autonomic Neuropathy Autonomic nerves are responsible for organ functions we subconsciously control, such as digesting, breathing, gland functions, and more. Those who have autonomic neuropathy may experience the following: • Digestive issues such as constipation or diarrhea RASPBERRY AND FIG OAT BARS Inspired by Delicious.com.au

As children return to school in August, they’ll likely be interested in one or more extracurricular activities. Opportunities both in school and in the community are numerous, such as participating in a local play, joining a school club or sports team, and many others. Extracurricular activities are perfect for getting kids out of the house, but these ventures will also help them gain valuable experiences along with these three benefits. IMPROVES SOCIAL SKILLS One of the biggest concerns parents have had since we experienced lockdowns during the pandemic is that their children struggle to communicate with others. Most of these kids were away from their peers for a year or more, which weakened their social skills. Participating in an extracurricular activity gives your kids a chance to communicate with others outside of a school setting. They’ll learn how other people think and how to best respond to certain situations.

If your kid likes animals, they might find a prospective career path by volunteering at the zoo. If one activity doesn’t appeal to them, try another. Before long, you’ll find the perfect interest for your child.
