Our Student Voices

Tiegan McAllaster

“I had heard about Region 10 from my family when I was young, and as an aspiring nurse, I always knew I wanted to go to Region 10 and take the CNA class. I knew the CNA class would help me tremendously on my journey to becoming a nurse. I did not know, however, that the CNA class and Region 10 would far surpass my expectations as a learning environment that truly made my last two years of high school the best years of my young life. One of the many things that make Region 10 special is the hands-on learning and the field experience you get by taking the class. Everything we learned we would always apply in the lab or in clinical or both. Mrs. McMahon would put on these role-play performances for us to apply the skills we learned in the classroom to real-life situations. Once I earned my CNA license and even before, it was very clear that I had so many career opportunities waiting for me. Region 10 and Mrs. McMahon had many different employers come to talk to us and Region 10 put on a great job fair where there were endless job opportunities available for all students. When I decided to take CNA I was taking it to become a CNA, I did not know that an amazing teacher and person would be teaching me all the skills to become a CNA. I don’t think there are any words that do Mrs. McMahon justice, but she is the most kind, caring, encouraging, and inspiring teacher and person I have ever met. She uses her life experience and her job experience to teach all of her students to be the best CNAs and people they can be. She teaches her students to exceed that standard of care in everything they do and in doing that she has built an outstanding reputation for herself and her students in the nursing community in the surrounding Brunswick area. I have been in many different situations where Mrs. McMahon’s name gets brought up and everyone who knows her loves her. Since I graduated from the CNA program, I went on to work at an assisted living facility in a dementia unit for the summer. I am currently in my senior year of high school, and I am taking the EMT course where I have learned even more medical knowledge that will help me greatly in my journey to become a Registered Nurse. Next year I will be attending the University of Maine in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program. My time in Mrs. McMahon’s CNA class is where I found my passion for being a caregiver and is something I will cherish for the rest of my life. “

Many nursing students from Region 10 Technical High School continue their profes- sional growth by pursuing a RN program. Students like Hannah Morris who graduat- ed at St. Joseph’s, often invite Mrs. McMahon to pin them at their pinning ceremony, four years after they’ve moved on from Region 10, as a way to honor the significant influence she had on their early careers.

Shelby Bishop “Seven years after graduating from the CNA program at Region 10, I am still so thankful I had that opportunity. The CNA program taught me workforce readiness, how to care for patients, so much about the human anatomy, how to better be a part of the community, and how to be a member of a team in healthcare. Things I wouldn’t have learned at my sending high-school. I also made amazing friends with common interests who I still talk to daily years later, and even had the opportunity to work with many of them throughout the years. At the age of seventeen, I had my CNA certification and was able to start working at an assisted living community after school and on the weekends all because the CNA program prepared me. Thank you Mrs. McMahon and everyone else at R10 for believing in me and allowing R10 to be such a huge part of my high-school journey!”
