Dec. 29 A hard lesson. Phil. 4:11-13. It is indeed profitable not only at the end of the year but several times during the year to enter the secret chambers of our owfi?heart, to speak freely there and thus be our audience; to take inventory and see' wherein we fall short of “the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ.” The more we commune with ourselves the more cause we have for hu mility and thus the more like Christ we become. As children of God we should not sat isfy ourselves with the mere knowledge of things but apply that knowledge unto wisdom by living out in a practical way the great truths learned. The knowledge of the world’s madness and folly teaches a man to value true, wisdom. How the sins and follies of men fill our hearts with grief 1 Jermin, commenting on verse 18 of the first chapter of Ecclesiastes (The Preach er) says, “In respect of the contempla tion of truth, knowledge causeth delight, but in respect of the things known, it causeth'sorrow. Now if they be good things; which are known, then the sorrow is from the; great labor which a man must take to attain the knowledge of them; and from: the little perfection of knowledge to which his great pains hath brought)him. If they be evil things' which are known, then :his. sorrow is' that; he is .subject to them;’’);- It is not necessary to be a drunkard to learn by) experience the demoralizing effect of alcohol. We can all learn much from the experience of others. Let us learn from the experience of the Prodigal Son that the delights of a far country tend to wreck and ruin our lives. There are ever so many things we can learn from our own experience of the year now drawing to a close. “Life is God’s school of experience. Some learn quickly, some slowly, some not at all, but continue to make the same mistakes again and again.” Let us learn and learn quickly by the mistakes of 1928, that 1929 will not see those same mistakes made. It behooves us as Christians to “examine ourselves” (not the other fellow). (2 Cor. 13:5.) The word “reprobates,” used three times in this and the two following verses, means “unapproved.” By examining ourselves we ask God to take out of our lives those things that are displeasing to Him. May we through the coming year apply our hearts unto the knowledge we have obtained during the year about to close. See Ps. 90:12; Prov. 2:2; 22:17; 23:12; Eccles. 7:25; 8:9, 16. -—o— C hoice N uggets A gentleman passing along a city com mon one day, saw a blind boy flying a kite.
