A Moravian missionary, named George Smith, went to Africa. He had been there but a short time and had only one convert, a poor woman, when he was driven from the country. They found this man dead one day. He had died praying for the Dark Continent. Failure? And yet when they celebrated the one hundredth anniversary of the founding of that mission, they learned that a company, accidentally stumbling upon a place where he had prayed, had found the copy of the Scriptures he had left. They also found one aged woman who was his convert. They sought to sum up his brief life, and reckoned more than thirteen thousand living converts that had sprung from that life which seemed such a failure.

D ecember 31, 1928 Text: 1 Cor. 10:13
A gentleman was one day opening a box of goods. His little son was standing near, and as the father took the packages from the box, he laid them on the arm of the boy. A young playmate was standing looking on. As parcel after parcel was laid on the boy, his friend began to fear that the load was becoming too heavy, and said: “Don’t you think you have as much as you can carry ?” “Never mind,” said the boy in a happy tone; “father knows how much I can'carry.” Brave,“ trustful little fellow! There was no danger, he felt, that his father would lay too heavy a load for him. It is such a spirit of loving trust in Him that God desires all His children to possess. |i 1929 Devotions Start H ere ...." F OR the coming year we are presenting devo tional studies which we trust w ill be par ticularly helpful to our readers. Each day we shall give a brief Scripture exposition, going through some of the choicest epistles of the New Testament verse by verse. These are taken from a personal diary of Bible meditation kept during the year 1928 by the Managing Editor of T he K ing ' s B usiness . Having come out of a devo tional period, we believe they will furnish food for devotional meditation for others. Ministers will find in these studies a complete running com ment- in the epistles to be covered. We start with that book so full of the riches of grace—Colos- sians. Will you meet us in the devotional corner each day of 1929? Text: Col. 1:15-19 Somehow one thinks of Gen. 1:1—“In the beginning God created”—on New Year’s day. I have been impressed, however, to go farther back. Col. 1:15 takes us into the dateless past. It tells of “His dear Son” (v.13) “who is the image of the in visible God, the firstborn of every creature” (lit. “all creation”). Jesus was prior to the created universe. “He is before all things and by Him all things consist” (cohere—hold together). “It pleased the Father that in Him should all fulness dwell” (lit. “take up its lasting abode”). The word “fulness” means “entire number,” hence “totality of divine powers.” Jesus is the exhaustion of Deity. “By Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are in earth, visible and invisible—-all things were created by Him and for Him” (v.16). If we get back to Jesus on January first we have gotten as far back as we can, for “He is the image of God,” the eternal manifestation of Deity to men.” “Christ fills my daily cup of peace With blessing to' the brim. I shall not want; I rest at ease. I am complete in Him.” J anuary 1, 1929 BEGINNINGS
