PREEMINENT Text: Col. 1 :18 We should not pass from our meditation of yesterday without noting the great purpose for which Deity became incarnate, died, arose and became Head of the Church: (In order) “that in all things He might have the preeminence” (v.18). We have it again in Phil. 2:6-11. “He was made in the likeness of men— He humbled Himself, became obedient unto death.” Why? “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow" (v. 10) ; “that every tongue should confess that He is Lord to the glory of God the Father” (v.ll). “’Tis not enough that Christ was born Beneath the star that shone, He must be born within thy heart Before He finds His throne.” He is preeminent in the material universe. He is the center around which the spiritual world revolves. The day will come when there will be nothing left to obscure Him from all men. But the vital question for me, here and now is: “Have I made Him preeminent in my life?” Text: Col. 1:12-14 It would be a sad oversight, at the beginning of a year, to pass pn from this chapter without pausing with the apostle to “give thanks unto the Father who hath made us meet [compe tent] to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light” (v.12). The Greek word for “made meet” is the one used by Jesus when he said: “It is enough” (Lk. 12:38). It is Paul’s word in 1 Cor. 2:16—“Who is sufficient?” If we are qualified for heaven, it Can only be because God Himself has provided “enough.” Jesus is our Sufficiency. : “We have redemption through His blood, even the forgiveness [sending away] of our sins” (v.14). Through faith in His all-sufficient work, we know we have been “snatched from the power of darkness and trans lated into the kingdom of the Son of His love” (v.13). Text: Col. 2 :3, 6 If we received exalted ideas of Jesus Christ in chap. 1, we shall get even higher conception in chap. 2. Deity is ascribed to Him in words which, if not true, must be the worst of blasphemy. “In Him are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” He is, for us, the treasure house of God’s truth. Any supposed supplies from other sources are a delusion. We must have Jesus or we will not have even the beginnings of spiritual understanding. Both knowledge and wisdom are hid in Him, but so hidden that they may be found of those in whom He dwells by faith. The closer we come to Him, the more we shall know of what is in God’s treasure chest. J anuary 3, 1929 SUFFICIENCY J anuary 4, 1929 TREASURES Read That Verse Again, Brother! Here is a timely paragraph from The Gospel Mes senger : Many Christians have read the fifteenth chapter of First Corinthians many times and have rejoiced in the comforting “wherefore” with which it concludes. But some of them have overlooked one qualifying clause. They have accepted heartily the “be ye steadfast, unmovable” but seem not to have noticed the “always abounding in the work of the Lord.” They prefer to abound simply in the hope of a glorious resurrection without abounding in the Lord’s work. We fear they are doomed to a great dis appointment. They ought to read that last verse once more, taking care not to miss the middle of it this time. “Thou, my everlasting portion, More than friend or life to me, All along my pilgrim journey, Saviour, let me walk with thee.”
