The state of the health workforce in Canada

to ensure these measures reflect real-world experiences. Our MHSU indicators track outcomes across hospitals, community care, home care and long-term care settings. Where possible, we report equity breakdowns — by age, gender, income and geography — to uncover gaps in access and outcomes. Canadians can explore these insights through CIHI’s public dashboard , which includes indicators such as repeat hospital stays for mental health and substance use, frequent emergency department visits, and rates of self-harm and suicide. Each data point helps paint a clearer picture of how the system is responding — and where it can do more. Turning insight into action CIHI’s MHSU analytics help shine a light on emerging trends and opportunities for improvement . In recent years, we’ve published several key reports, including: Taking the pulse: Measuring shared priorities for Canadian health care This annual report presents information on key indicators and initiatives to assess how mental health and substance use services are supporting the health of Canadians. Virtual care: Impact of COVID-19 on physician mental health services A series of digital reports, published in 2022, explores trends in virtual mental health services provided by physicians and how patients used these services during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our annual health workforce report shows the number of health care providers and the proportion involved in direct patient care. Providers include registered psychiatric nurses, psychologists, psychotherapists and other health professionals.

Commonwealth Fund survey

This annual report shows how health care experiences of Canadians compare across 10 high-income countries, including access to virtual mental health services and barriers to mental health care access.

Child and youth mental health

This report, published in May 2025, examines children and youth who received care for mental health disorders, and how factors — such as age, sex, income, geography and diagnosis — affect patterns of care. Looking ahead CIHI’s indicator reporting and analytics are helping to provide essential information about MHSU care in Canada — but there’s still more to do . Gaps remain in areas such as community- based and privately funded mental health care, and more standardized, comprehensive pan-Canadian data is needed. CIHI is committed to working with partners to fill those gaps, strengthen data quality and improve how mental health outcomes are measured. By connecting new data sources and sharing insights widely, we can better support planning, policy and care - together .
