Since launching our Women’s Mental Health program in 2021, we’ve provided free, culturally appropriate care to over 120,000 women, including Black women across Canada through partnerships with BMHC. Noojimo Health, an Indigenous-owned partner, has relationships with 150 communities across rural and urban Canada. Together, we’ve set a goal to empower over 600 Indigenous communities for the next seven generations by expanding access to Noojimo’s care providers. These partnerships are helping us build a more inclusive mental health system – one that reflects the diversity of Canadians and delivers care where it’s needed most. Why is it so important to offer personalized, culturally appropriate mental health support? Inclusivity in mental health care is no longer optional. It is something Canadians expect. More than 60% of Canadian employees say it’s important that their therapist understands their culture, language, or religion. That number rises to 71% among workers aged 18 to 24. This is a clear call for culturally appropriate care. And when the unique lived experiences of Canadians are respected and represented in their care, it also means therapy is more effective. Therapeutic alignment, or the sense of being understood by a provider, is one of the most consistent predictors of whether therapy actually works. That’s why inclusivity is at the centre of GreenShield’s care offerings. It’s not an afterthought.

Canadians who expect digital-first solutions and need timely support. Most importantly, we’re seeing real impact. After just three sessions of digital cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), more than half of our users under 35 report feeling better. They’re less anxious and less depressed. And because our solutions are virtual, they’re expanding our reach, making care more accessible for people in remote areas or those balancing work, caregiving, and family responsibilities. Underserved groups such as Black Canadians, Indigenous communities, and women are facing some of the greatest barriers to care. How is GreenShield working to close those gaps? At GreenShield, advancing health equity is central to our mission. Through our Creating Shared Value model, we reinvest our excess earnings directly into expanding access to care – prioritizing communities that have long been underserved, including women, youth, racialized individuals, 2SLGBTQ+ people, and low-income Canadians. A key part of this work is partnering with community organizations like Black Mental Health Canada (BMHC) and Noojimo Health, which serve Black and Indigenous communities with trauma- informed, culturally rooted care. Together, we co-create inclusive solutions that are embedded into GreenShield’s ecosystem – extending our impact and helping shape the services we offer.

Inclusivity in mental health care is no longer optional. It is something Canadians expect.
