I recently had an elderly family member experience a behavioral health crisis, which required hospital admission. The care this individual received was top-tier, hands-on and therapy intensive. However, when I went to pick him up from the hospital, everything changed. I didn’t realize that once he got into my truck, he would be entirely on his own again, with no lifeline to his care team. He told me he felt alone, and on his own again. The contrast was crippling – from the support and monitoring of the care team, to what can only be described as a care desert … empty, silent, and scary. When I asked him a week later, if he heard from his care team, he said he hadn’t heard anything. Not a single call, text, or email. When he did call, he was sharply reminded that if he felt he needed support, he would need to readmit via the emergency department and begin the entire process over again.
who dedicated her nursing career to providing compassionate, professional treatment to the patients under her care. In three short years we launched Nanci – a HIPAA-compliant, real- time, AI-supported application that accomplishes these goals and many more. Nanci is also SMART on FHIR interoperable and shares information with many EHRs. Supporting patients getting ready We all know behavioral health, especially with addiction, depression, and anxiety can be a minefield for new patients. Patients have social pressures, stigma, fears, and insecurities as they launch their own road of recovery.
Is that really the best care path for a behavioral health patient in crisis? It became clear that the needs for help rarely align with the short windows where patients are in the presence of their providers. We need to reimagine this coordination of care strategy, connecting patients back to that source of sanity and calm. I know patients of all kinds, with their own unique needs, who can benefit from a real- time connection with their care teams. This connection needs to solve a slew of issues – from being personalized yet secure, to being a time and money saver for overtaxed providers and staff. It also needs to be human-centric. In 2022 we formed a team of dreamers, doctors, and designers to create, from the ground up, an entirely new way of coordinating care, supporting patients, and reducing administrative costs for providers. The application, called Nanci™, is named after my mother
