ABOUT OUR PROGRAM

This two-year program equips students with the skills required to teach and manage a preschool program. In the first year, students focus on developing essential teaching skills and managing a preschool classroom, spending three days a week gaining hands-on experience in our Community Preschool program. This program caters to 3-5 year-old children from the local community. Using the Maine Learning and Developmental Standards, student teachers deliver a comprehensive curriculum emphasizing that play is central to young children’s learning. They undertake a detailed case study of a single child, utilizing observational skills to assess developmental progress. Additional training includes classroom safety and supervision, preparing nutritional snacks, and professional communication with preschool families. The remaining two days are devoted to classroom learning, covering various developmental stages and effective teaching strategies for young children. All learning outcomes and assignments are compiled in a portfolio to demonstrate the student teachers’ comprehension and application of the curriculum. Early Childhood Education Prepare for a rewarding career in Early Childhood Education with our comprehensive two-year program. Gain hands-on experience in our Community Preschool program, develop essential teaching skills, and earn college credits while making a difference in the lives of young learners.

In their second year, students continue to apply their skills directly in the preschool classroom for three days each week. Academic learning during the remaining two days involves coursework from Southern Maine Community College, earning students three college credits upon completion. This curriculum is taught within the Region 10 classroom. Students further enhance their portfolios with academic assignments and, upon passing the NOCTI exam, qualify as Certified Early Childcare Assistants in Maine. Additionally, students may engage in a six to eight-week Internship Program, working alongside a Mentor Teacher in classrooms serving various age groups, from infants to third graders.
