(1) A fter these things, the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them tw o and tw o before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come. (2) Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the la bourers are few : pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that, he would send forth labourers into his harvest. (3) Go your w ays: behold, 1 send you forth as lambs among wolves. (4) Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way. (5T And Into what soever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house. (6) And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again. Introduction: In the ninth chapter we had the mission of the Twelve in Northern Gal ilee. Power was delegated to them, but they abode near to the presence of the Lord. (1) REPRESENTATION AND REG ULATION, vs. 1-7. “ Sent them two by two.” In the preceding chapter ,the Lord had been putting some severe tests to those who were seeking to follow Him. Disçipleship was shown to include: (a) Devotion to men— the salvation, not the destruction of men’s lives; (b) Denial of self. The Son of Man had not where to lay His head, (ç) Decision of char acter. Having put his hand to the plow, the disciple was not to turn back. Now our Lord appoints seventy mis sionaries. Seventy is the number ot completion multiplied by the perfect number (10x7). It corresponds to the seventy elders of ■ Israel, as the twelve apostles corresponded to the twelve pa triarchs. At Elim there were twelve wells of water and seventy palm trees, corresponding to the twelve patriarchs and seventy elders. (Ex. 15^:27.) The Seventy were sent before His face. They represented Himself. He
