Primary and Secondary Sources Historians use different sources to find out about people, places, and events in the past. There are two main types of sources. Primary sources are created by people who saw or experienced something themselves. They are usually created around the time of the event. studied primary sources. Secondary sources include textbooks, magazine articles, book reviews, encyclopedias, and documentaries. A story you write about your own vacation is a primary source. You were there and experienced the vacation. Someone can interview you and write about your vacation, too. Their story is a secondary source.
