The Declaration of Independence is an important document in the United States. This document was written by Thomas Jefferson in 1776. It established the United States as an independent nation away from Great Britain. This meant the United States would have their own government. The Declaration of Independence explains the purpose of government. ​A government is meant to protect “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” The new United States government would be founded on these principles.
