Present Essential Question to Class: Present the essential question, learning objectives, and student “I can” statements. Have students preview the text to identify the vocabulary words for this week. Unpack weekly vocabulary, as appropriate. Article 1: Urban Communities Word Count: 109 Vocabulary: urban: land, such as a city, where many people live in one area developed: land that has been changed by constructing buildings High Impact Teaching Strategy: Questioning Lesson Plan: 1. Have students number the sentences in the article. (There are eight sentences in the paragraph.) 2. Read the article with the class. 3. Reread the article. As you read, stop after the second sentence and then ask students to respond to the question: According to the article, what is an urban area? (city) Give them some time to respond to the question. 4. Ask students to use a highlighter or pencil to highlight or underline the portion of the sentence that helped them answer the question. 5. Reread sentences 3-5. Ask students to answer the question: “What does an urban area look like?” (businesses and homes are close together) Give students some time to respond. 6. Ask students to highlight or underline the portion of the sentence that helped them answer the question. 7. Reread sentences 6-8. After rereading the sentences, ask students to answer the question: “How is transportation organized in an urban area?” (to move as many goods and people as possible) 8. Ask students to highlight or underline the portion of the sentence that helped them answer the question. 9. Discuss the article as a class. Ask students to respond to the following question based on what they have read: “Is the community in which we live an urban area? Why or why not?” (Answers will vary) Use students’ responses to check for understanding. Article Assessment Questions: 1.
