Article 5: San Francisco: Part Two Word Count: 203 Vocabulary: N/A High Impact Teaching Strategies: Questioning, Collaborative Learning Lesson Plan:

1. Place students in groups of four. Explain to the groups that you will be first reading the article “San Francisco: Part Two” together as a class. Explain that after the first read, the second reading will be jigsawed. Explain that a jigsaw is a strategy that allows group members to specialize or focus on one topic. 2. Ask students to number the paragraphs. (There are four paragraphs in this article.) 3. Read the article to the class. 4. Next, jigsaw the second reading by assigning one paragraph to each of the group members. 5. Explain that each paragraph has focus questions that will help them focus on the information they will be reading in their assigned paragraph. a. Paragraph 1 Focus Question: How did the discovery of gold in California contribute to the growth of San Francisco? b. Paragraph 2 Focus Question: What struggles did San Francisco encounter as it grew? c. Paragraph 3 Focus Question: How did transportation change to meet the needs of the growing city? d. Paragraph 4 Focus Question: What attracted people to the growing city of San Francisco? What evidence do we have today of the city's rich diversity? 6. Give students time to reread their paragraphs and harvest the information needed to respond to the text-based questions. Ask students to respond to their questions in complete sentences. 7. After all students have responded to their text-based questions, have each group member, according to the paragraph they read, share their question and their response. 8. Once groups have finished their task, pass out a piece of poster paper. Ask students, as a group, to write a collaborative paragraph using the responses to the text-based questions that answer the collective question: What conditions contributed to San Francisco's growth? When they are done, have each group

read their collaborative paragraph out loud to the whole class. 9. Use the collaborative paragraphs as a check for understanding. Article Assessment Questions: 1. What created many conflicts?
