true and- false religion, the worker asked: “Where were you born?” “ In Spain,” the answer came. “Yes,” said the worker, “and there you were taught that there was only one religion; there you saw the immoral lives o f the priests, and there you never saw nor read a Bible. Also, there you saw the rich gowns o f the priests and there you were told that the Pope, riding in gold and silver brocade, was to be bowed before and his feet to be kissed. Was not that what you saw? Why does the church for bid you to read the Bible? Is it not to keep you in ignorance o f the true faith in Christ and the way o f free salvation?” The fellow’s heart became less bitter and he seemed to wonder how the worker could tell him so much o f his bitter experience. He listened eagerly, and as the W ord was opened and Christ, “Who is the image, of the invisible God, the first-born o f every creature,” shown to him, and as the con trast was drawn between the Pope in pomp and Christ washing His disciples’ feet, and the way o f salvation by the free gift o f grace, he sweetly made the choice, and said he believed in Christ and would accept Him. It was a happy time. “ In Him are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowl edge.” “ He is altogether lovely.” ' An instance o f sorrow came to our knowledge through the papers, saying that the S. W e thank God for - the power o f His W ord and rejoice in the privilege we have o f letting the light o f the Gospel shine’ in these harbors in which God has permitted us to labor. An illustration o f a case where the ques tion “Who is God ?” was asked' in sincer ity, came to the worker’s notice when a cabin was entered on a little vessel and a rather sad-looking young fellow, a native o f Spain, greeted the visitor. Soon a lively conversation ensued, as the bright young fellow, looking over “ The Way to God,” in Spanish, shoved the book and tracts aside, saving “I’m through with religion forever; take these books nut o f my sight.” Bitter and harsh words were spoken by him, but the Lord opened the way for the worker to say that perhaps he, too, would be through with religion o f the sort experi enced by the young man.
