1. Jesus Restoring a Dead Girl to Life, vv. 21-24, 35-4^. Where was Jesus at this time? (The “other side” means the 'other -side from Gadara. He was now in Capernaum, a city at the northwest end o f the Sea o f Galilee.) Was He idle or busy? What was He busy doing? Who interrupted His teaching? What was the synagogue? What were the duties o f a ruler o f the synagogue? (He was one o f -a committee o f three, who directed the conduct o f the services o f the synagogue, and also its business details? Perhaps they also exercised some legal authority. The duties o f the elders and trustees, or the prudential committee, or the official board o f our various denominations, are illustrations in point.) Was it the rule, or an exception to the rule, for a ruler o f a synagogue to appeal to Jesus for anything? What was their usual attitude toward Him ? What led Jairus to appeal to Jesus? How old was the little girl? Would his need alone be enough to explain why he came to Jesus? Would he have appealed to Jesus had he not had some faith that Jesus could and would help him? How much faith had he? (See verse 23). How did his earnest ness show itself? How did his humility show itself? How did his tenderness show itself? From out o f what did they grow? Love for his “little daughter” ? What tone o f voice do you think Jairus spoke in? What effect did his pleading have upon Jesus? Does humble, earnest,I loving, per sistent pleading ever fail with Jesus? (John 14:13, 14; 15:7; Luke 11:5-13).' What delayed Jesus on His way to Jairus’ house? (W e shall pass this incident now and return to it later). What bad news was brought to Jairus while on the way home? Might he have felt vexed over the delay? How did Jesus deliver him from any such feelings ? Did Jesus know the child was dead even before the news reached the father? (cf. John 11:11-15). Could the delay hinder

Him permanently from doing what He started to do? (cf. Phil. 1:6). How did the delay really become a blessing to Jai-> rus? Who wanted to follow Jesus out of curiosity? Whom did He allow to go with Him ? What did He find when He reached the house? Why was it out o f place at that time? In what condition was the child when Jesus at last reached the house? Who were certain that it wag so? What did Jesus say she was? What is the death o f the believer called in the New Testament? (1 Cor. 15;8; 1 Thess, 4:13). Where does the believer go to,when he falls “asleep in Jesus” ? (2 Cor. 5:6-8; Phil. 1:23). v is this anything to be afraid of, or lamented? What is to be raised from the grave at Christ’s com ing? (1 Cor. 15 :35, 44; 1 Thess. 4:16). What will the believer receive when he returns with Christ at His coming? (1 Thess. 4:14, 16; 2 .Cor. 5:1-4; 1 Cor.,15:51- 53). Is the coming o f Christ, then, some thing to be longed for by the believer? Was the coming o f Jesus to the bedside o f his dead daughter longed for by Jairus? Why? Whom did Jesus take with Him into where the child lay ? Why did He take the father and mother in? Why did He take Peter, and James, and John? Why did He driVe the crowd o f mourners out? How did He recall the little girl to life? How were her parents and the disciples sure that she was really alive again? What did Jesus bid her parents do for her? What does this show us about Jesus? What strange em bargo did He lay upon those present? Why did He not want it blazoned abroad? What effect had the miracle upon those who saw it? In what condition are" we all by nature? (Eph. 2:1 ). Who only can make us alive? What does He use to impart life to us? (1 Peter 1:23), Just as Christ’s Word then brought life to the little girl, s o ' it brings life to us now. How important is it that we meditate upon, and memorize God’s word ?
