Jesus Giving L ife to a Little Girl

TV/T EMORY VERSE : “ Bless Jehovah, O, my soul, and forget not all His benefits.”—Psa. 103.2. Preparation .—Have you seen that at this time o f the year many o f the trees and flowers have no leaves? I f you lived in the country where the snow falls you would see many more o f them look as if they were dead. Are they? No, they are just asleep. When you go to sleep at night what wakes you in the morning? Mother’s voice, and the daylight. What do you think will wake the trees and flowers? God’s voice, and the springtime. When He says, “Wake up,” nothing can’ sleep. Sometimes people go to sleep and nobody can wake them but God. When He speaks they will wake up, rested and ready for the work He has for them to do. Presentation .—Last week we saw the Lord Jesus and His friends leave Caper naum to cross the lake in a boat. Do you remember what happened? W e do not know how long they were away, but many people watched for the boat to come back, and that is the reason they found them on the shore when they returned. As they came out o f the boat a great many people crowded about them. It made it very hard for them to walk through the streets. Sud denly the people parted to let a man pass through to Jesus, for He was a great man, a ruler in the Jewish church. The people must have been surprised to see this rich man kneel down in the street at Jesus’ feet. He turned his troubled face up toward the Master and said, “My little daughter is sick. I am afraid she will die. Please come and put your hands on her. I know she will be made well and live.” Jesus said, “I will

go with you.” So they started toward his house. There weré so many people crowd ing around that they had to walk very slowly. While the Lord Jesus was speaking to a woman in the crowd, somebody came from the Ruler’s house and said, “Your little girl is dead. Don’t trouble the Mas ter about it.” When Jesus heard this, He said to the Ruler. “ Do not be afraid, only believe.” Then He told all the people to go away except Peter, James, and John, who with the Ruler, went to his house. As they came near they could hear the people crying, as if there were no voice that could wake the sleeping girl. When they came into the house, Jesus said to the people, “Why are you making all this noise? The little girl is not dead but asleep.” They laughed at Him, for they had never seen anyone wakened from this kind o f sleep. In the room was only the father, the mother, the three friends, the little girl lying on the couch, and the Lord Jesus. He went over to her and took her by the hand and said, “ Little girl, arise.” Like thé flowers and every other sleeping thing, the little girl awoke when she heard God’s voice. She stood up, and ran across the room to her parents, as she was about twelve years o f age. The Lord Jesus had not only made her alivë, but He had made her well, so He told them to give her some thing to eat. The Bible says that they were Surprised. I think that they had not yet learned, what you and I have, that He is the Son o f God, and it is His voice that wakes all sleeping things. Prayer .—That we will remember when our i friends die, they are only asleep and God’s voice will wake them.
