Key Lessons For A Postvention When Losing A Co-Worker BY FRANK KING Tom had always considered himself a good boss. He ran a mid-sized company that prided itself on a close-knit team and a culture of hard work. Birthdays were celebrated, milestones acknowledged, and Tom liked to think he knew his employees well. But one Monday morning, Tom received news that would shatter his world and change his under- standing of leadership forever: Dave, a longtime employee, had died by suicide over the weekend.
GBP To Invest $1 Billion In Arkansas Kraft Mill
Green Bay, Wisconsin based Green Bay Pack- aging (GBP) has committed to investing more than $1 billion to expand its existing kraft li- nerboard mill in Morrilton, Arkansas. As part of the project, dubbed Project PowerPack, Green Bay also will purchase roughly 300 acres of land for future investments and ex- pansion. The project involves replacing key com- ponents, such as the recovery boiler and biomass boiler infrastructure, in addition to installing an electric turbine generator to re- duce scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emis- sions. The company plans to add 35 new jobs at the site as part of the multiyear expansion effort, including operators, mechanics, elec- tricians and engineers. This increases the 620-person headcount at the company’s five facilities in that area. The Morrilton mill produces kraft liner- board from virgin fiber sourced from Green Bay Packaging’s lumber mill, and the board supplies more than a dozen of the company’s corrugated converting plants in addition to external customers. The $1 billion investment CONTINUED ON PAGE 3
The shock rippled through the company like a silent earthquake. Some employees wept openly; others grew quiet and withdrawn. Ru- mors and questions swirled — “Did anyone know he was struggling?” “Could we have done something?” Tom himself felt lost, unsure how to lead his team through such a tragedy. His first instinct was to keep things quiet, hoping to avoid discomfort or gossip. But as he watched his staff struggle with shock, guilt, and grief, Tom realized that silence only deepened the pain and stigma. He knew he had to do something different. He reached out to a trusted HR professional and learned about the concept of “postvention”— the actions taken after a suicide to support those affected and prevent fur- ther harm. Tom quickly gathered his leadership team, and together, they made a plan that would become a turning point for the entire company. Acknowledge The Loss Openly And Compassionately The first step was to address the loss head-on. Tom called a com- CONTINUED ON PAGE 24

600k tons per year,” said Michael Roxland, senior paper and packaging analyst at Truist Securities, in the note. The industry also is going through a “significant capacity reset” with approximately 2.3 million tons of capacity closures, about 5.5 percent of industry supply, already announced or completed in 2025, he said. Truist and other analysts anticipate more closures in the short to medium term. Given the closures and Green Bay’s multiyear timeline for its expansion to be complete, “we believe the industry is better positioned today to deal with potential new ca- pacity” than in previous quarters, Roxland said. Green Bay Packaging held a groundbreaking ceremony at the Morrilton site last week to mark the start of construc- tion on the expansion. Company executives joined Arkan- sas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders and other community leaders for the event. Leaders said that this is the largest capital investment project in central Arkansas’ history. Green Bay Packaging has made other expansion-relat- ed announcements in the last year, including a land acqui- sition in Arizona, a warehouse lease contract in Illinois and a packaging facility expansion in Germantown, Wisconsin. It also acquired Springfield, Missouri-based SMC Packag- ing Group in June 2024. Most of the privately owned, Wisconsin-based compa- ny’s footprint — which consists of mills, corrugated con- verting and production for folding cartons and coated la- bels — is concentrated in the Midwest and central part of the country.

has the potential to double the Morrilton mill’s capacity, the company said. That would put the enhanced capacity at more than 1.03 million tons, according to a June 4 note to investors from Truist Securities. The move is prompting discussions among observers about the company’s timing strategy, considering the cur- rent supply and demand environment and the spate of clo- sures already in 2025. “While additional capacity is negative for container- board supply/demand dynamics and pricing, normalized industry demand growth of 1.0-1.5 percent annually implies that the industry needs capacity growth of about 400-

G-P Monticello (MS) Continues To Innovate, Set Records
In 2024, Georgia-Pacific’s linerboard mill Monticello, Mis- sissippi reported that it became one of the few facilities in North America to produce more than 1 million tons of product. The mill also set a new daily production record in November 2024 and recorded three of its top 10 all-time monthly production rates that same year.Last year, Monti- cello produced more than a million tons of linerboard, set- ting production records four times. Today, Monticello epitomizes success. But it wasn’t very long ago that Monticello struggled with operations, production and employee morale and retention. Employ- ees decided to explore and address the problems using tools they were familiar with – Principle Based Manage-
ment™. Principle Based Management, used throughout Georgia-Pacific to accomplish the company’s goals and objectives, is a framework that enables individuals and organizations to succeed long-term. It helps employees
create value for the company through their contributions and fulfill their own person- al goals. By applying the principle of bot- tom-up versus top down, leaders sought solutions from Monticello employees at all levels and ideas poured in. This is the rea- son for its success today. “The employees felt tired and defeat- ed. They complained about inadequate procedures and equipment that hindered productivity. Communication was lacking,” said Gerry Swain, currently vice president at Georgia-Pacific’s Brunswick Cellulose facility in Georgia, and a former Monticello employee. “There wasn’t a clear focus on short- or long-term planning. Employees didn’t feel they were aligned on goals for the facilities, and silos were common, with little collaboration. Lots of work was done with little progress because we weren’t achieving production goals.” Monticello developed a shared vision, one where everyone contributed the best of their skills, knowledge and ideas. Build- ing communication among teams helped identify and close gaps that helped with performance and built capabilities to main- tain the momentum. Mill employees creat- ed a group chat where people could freely discuss ideas and what could work to im- prove work and morale. The information taken from the chat helped craft a plan for success. “The employees had the recipe for suc- cess, so to speak,” said Tony Brown, vice president, Monticello. “They knew the ma- chines, the procedures to improve produc- tivity, years of experience and their own specific skill sets. them to do what they already knew how to do. They also needed the right leadership. Jeff Joyce, the former vice president at Monticello, came in with great ideas and a willingness to listen, which made all the difference.” In 2023, Georgia-Pacific made a $110 million invest- ment in Monticello, proving to employees that the com- pany believed Monticello could be successful. Employ- ees continued to work on operations and saw improved productivity. New and improved asset maintenance work processes were introduced and embraced, and the teams took a proactive approach to environmental health and safety (EH&S) initiatives. The work continues. The years' long improvement plan at Monticello helped the facility move past a planned outage to achieve the mil- lion tons milestone with only 10 days left in the year. “Monticello has a long history of excellence. There’s a lot of knowledge and skill in this facility, and we had the tools to use them to reach our potential,” said Tom Weid- man, operations manager, Monticello. Georgia-Pacific believed in the employees at Monticel- lo and knew they were capable of exceeding production expectations and doing work that fulfilled them while con- tributing to the facility’s success. The facility serves as an example for other facilities of how to tap into the knowl- edge and commitment of their employees to make a differ- ence in production and workplace performance.

Chief Digital Elevates Packaging And Display Printing Production With Digital Technology BY DAN BRUNTON Founded in 1994 by military veteran Lamar Guthrie, Chief Digital has carved out a reputation for packaging, displays, printing, and fulfillment solutions. Guthrie, known as ‘Chief’ for his composed decision-making and adaptability, laid a foundation built on innovation, precise execution, and the unwavering pursuit of excellence. Today, the Acworth, Georgia based company continues to honor this legacy throughconsistent inno- vation and industry-leading production standards.
• Only standard hand tools are required for all maintenance • Direct drive with no chains or sprockets • No tools for media change required » just zip it up » media change out in minutes • Filter is accessible for visual inspection during operation, Significant Advantages Over Conventional Dust Filtration Technology
Chief Digital initially pioneered flexographic printing, setting new stan- dards with high-resolution 120+dpi printing and in-line UV and die-cut- ting. However, the company’s true digital transformation began around 2008 with its first HP Scitex FB950 press, accelerating quickly with the addition of the HP 700 in 2010. The rapid integration of these presses established Chief Digital as a digital print leader, setting the stage for a significant leap in capability and quality. By 2012, Chief Digital installed the first of two HP 7600 presses, mark- ing a pivotal transition toward a fully digital workflow capable of support- ing both short and medium-run jobs. The installation of an HP15500 press in 2015 further bolstered Chief Digital’s capabilities, delivering superior quality and enabling entry into highly demanding market segments, in- cluding electronics and cosmetics. The most transformative step occurred in 2018 when Chief Digital be- came the first US adopter of the HP PageWide C550 press. This installa- tion revolutionized their production capacity, scaling from thousands to tens of thousands of high-quality digital prints daily, drastically enhancing efficiencyand productivity. The C550 was the missing piece we needed to convert even the most demanding customers to digitalprint, stated Aaron Hayes, VP of Digital Operations, Chief Digital. “It provided the quality, flexibility, and scale re- quired to meet increasingly complex client demands.” Digital printing technology has delivered substantial operational ben- efits to Chief Digital, including significant reductions in setup times, waste minimization, and the agility to produce exact quantities on demand. The shift from traditional flexo methods, with their lengthy setup and frequent adjustments, to digital printing has dramatically streamlined operations. For Chief Digital’s customers, adopting digital printing means flexibil- CONTINUED ON PAGE 14

year but in reality, it released more than 2.5 million tons. The discrepancy stems from an Environmental Protection Agency policy that allows facilities to omit emissions from the burning of wood and wood byproducts, known as “bio- genic” fuels. “This plant is burning dirty fuels using a boiler built in 1940, and the pollution is hitting communities and the cli- mate alike,” said Jen Duggan, executive director of the En- vironmental Integrity Project. “Even in the digital age, we need paper products. But there is no reason a clean sheet of paper needs to be made with dirty fuels and antiquated methods.” The Smurfit Westrock press office did not to respond to an email seeking comment. The report, titled “A Paper Trail of Pollution,” paints a dire portrait of the U.S. pulp and paper industry. Over a six- month period, researchers reviewed thousands of public
A World War II-era boiler in Virginia is at the center of a growing debate over the paper industry’s role in climate change and how much pollution goes uncounted due to loopholes in federal reporting rules. According to an article on VirginiaMercury.com , the Smurfit Westrock paper mill in Covington, Virginia, a 126-year-old facility located north of Roanoke, released more climate-warming pollution in 2023 than any other paper mill in the country, according to a sweeping new report by the Environmental Integrity Project on environ- mentalintegrity.org . The watchdog group found that the facility reported emitting 970,084 metric tons of greenhouse gases last
records and visited mills across the coun- try, ultimately studying the 185 largest pa- per and pulp facilities in the United States. Their findings suggest that many of these plants are operating with outdated infra- structure, lax oversight and little account- ability for their true environmental impact. Among the most striking revelations is that nearly three-quarters of the mills rely on outdated boilers, with an average age of 41 years. One of the oldest, built in 1928, remains in use at a mill in Longview, Wash- ington. In contrast, experts recommend replacing industrial boilers after about 15 years. At more than 40 percent of the fa- cilities studied, at least one boiler was a half-century old or older. The Covington mill, which employs sev- eral hundred people and is a fixture of the local economy, has long drawn criticism from nearby residents for the foul odors, soot and water pollution it produces. In 2023, it was the nation’s top emit- ter of methane — a greenhouse gas more than 80 times as potent as carbon dioxide over a 20-year period — releasing more than 214,000 metric tons. The mill also ranked third among U.S. paper facilities for hydrochloric acid emissions, releasing an estimated 170,000 pounds. The plant’s impact extends beyond the air. State records document at least a dozen incidents over the past five years in which locals reported dark, cloudy, or con- taminated discharges — including black liquor, a toxic wood-processing byproduct — flowing into the nearby Jackson River, a tributary of the James River, and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay.

Groups including Ameripen, the Can Manufacturers Institute, the Flexible Packaging Association, the Biode- gradable Products Institute, the Plastics Industry Associa- tion, the Carton Council and more have previously voiced support for an alternate EPR bill, known as the Affordable Waste Reduction Act and sponsored by Democratic state Sen. Monica Martinez, which has not moved. The Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act also passed the Senate last year, but ran out of time for consideration in the Assembly. This came as a relief to packaging and brand groups, which dislike what they see as a bill trying to do a lot more than set up an EPR program. Ameripen, for example, has called it “overly prescriptive and unfeasible.” Certain waste and recycling companies have also opposed the bill. The bill would also restrict the state from counting chemical recycling technologies as recycling and calls for phasing out PFAS and certain other chemicals from pack- aging. This year, the session’s end date in the Assembly has been extended from June 12 to June 17. In a letter promulgated by the Business Council of New York State and signed by packaging groups this year, the organization said the Martinez bill was modeled on “re- cently adopted Minnesota legislation, and informed by programs adopted in other states” to create “a more work- able approach to increasing the recovery and reuse of post-consumer packaging and paper products.”
One complaint, filed in November 2022, warned of “polluted water destroying the Upper James River fishery.” The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality dis- missed the complaint. Victoria Higgins, Virginia director of the Chesapeake Climate Action Network, said the Covington facility is a clear example of how outdated equipment and regulatory gaps are allowing the paper industry to skirt accountability. “Pollution from industrial factories burning trees is an un- der-counted source of climate-warming pollution,” she said. “In order to deliver on the promise of clean air and a stable climate in Virginia, we need to ensure facilities like the more than century-old Smurfit Westrock mill are mov- ing to cleaner energy sources.” New York EPR Bill Unpopular With Packaging Groups Awaits Fate With days remaining in New York’s legislative session, an extended producer responsibility bill that is unpopular with packaging-related trade groups has again moved forward. The Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act, a bill sponsored by Democratic state Sen. Pete Harck- ham, passed the Senate. It was delivered to the Assembly and referred to the Ways and Means Committee.

This collabora- tive robot, or cobot, is engineered for safety and built to work directly alongside humans in a shared workspace, enabling efficient, fenceless production while keeping worker safety and operational flexibility at the forefront. “The cobot acts as the ‘operator’ of the eZFa system, eliminating the need for manual lifting and repetitive phys- ical tasks,” said Jerry Blosser, Electrical Design Engineer at A.G. Stacker. “Our goal was to automate the load forming process without compromising safety and did not require robot programming knowledge to operate, and Motoman delivered.” With the Motoman cobot integrated into the new eZFa, A.G. Stacker customers can expect a fully automated, op- erator-free solution for unit load forming — setting a new standard for efficiency and ergonomics in the corrugated industry. The eZFa is currently in the advanced stages of testing, with plans for commercial launch later this year. For more information about A.G. Stacker visit www.agstacker.com or call (540) 234-6012. his emphasis and commitment to innovation, quality, and sustainability. The new Koenig & Bauer press investment underscores Patel’s dedication to provide his customers with the best possible packaging solutions while adopting environmentally responsible practices. “Our philosophy has always been to invest in cut- ting-edge technology to stay ahead of the curve and de- liver eye-catching packaging solutions,” says Patel. “This new Koenig & Bauer press enhances our production speed, precision, and color consistency, giving us the abil- ity to take on more complex and high-end packaging proj- ects while improving overall efficiency.” Patel specified that the new Rapida press be equipped with a variety of standout features such as advanced color control, fast makeready times, and LED drying technology. The ability to print with greater accuracy, reduce waste, and streamline workflow were major factors in his deci- sion. These features allow UPBX to deliver consistent, high-quality results with increased efficiency to a diverse range of industries, including food and beverage, cosmet- ics, pharmaceuticals, and consumer goods.
COMMUNITY DATA CONNECTION DESIGN INNOVATION
As market demands evolve, UPBX continues to expand its reach, particularly in premium packaging solutions and sustainable materials. Color accuracy and consistency are critical for brand integrity, especially in luxury and consum- er packaging. With Koenig & Bauer’s state-of-the-art color management system, says Patel, UPBX can ensure that every run maintains the highest level of production, reduc- ing color variation and eliminating costly reprints. Operating in California requires UPBX to be excep- tionally aware of the state’s stringent environmental reg- ulations. The Rapida’s LED curing technology allows the firm to reduce emissions, lower energy consumption, and eliminate harmful solvents. “This investment reflects our ongoing commitment to sustainability and regulatory com- pliance,” says Patel. Equally impressive is the significant energy savings and improved drying speed and efficiency derived from the Rapida’s LED curing technology. Janak Patel, president of Ultimate Paper Box, has invested in a new mid-size Rapida 106 41-inch eight-color LED sheetfed press to its City of Industry, California pressroom from its long- time partner Koenig & Bauer.

was not only acceptable, but encouraged. Restore Balance And Honor The Person Who Died To help the team process their loss, Tom organized a memorial service at the company. Employees shared sto- ries about Dave—his infectious laugh, his dedication to his work, the time he stayed late to help a new hire. They created a memory wall, where people could post notes, photos, and drawings. This act of remembrance allowed employees to honor their colleague, find meaning in their grief, and begin to restore a sense of balance in the work- place. Train The Team On Postvention and Prevention Tom realized that addressing the aftermath was only part of the solution. He wanted to ensure that his com- pany would be better prepared in the future—not just to respond to tragedy, but to prevent it. He arranged for sui- cide prevention and postvention training for all staff. Em- ployees learned how to spot warning signs of depression and suicide, how to start difficult conversations, and what resources were available for those in need. They also dis- cussed how to build a workplace culture that prioritized Through these steps, Tom’s company slowly began to heal. The tragedy became a catalyst for lasting change: • Employees felt safer discussing mental health. • Conversations that once felt taboo became part of the CONTINUED ON PAGE 26 mental health and reduced stigma. pany-wide meeting. With a heavy heart, he spoke honestly with the staff, naming the tragedy, expressing his own sad- ness, and acknowledging the shock everyone felt. He in- vited employees to support each other, to share memories of Dave, and to reach out if they needed help. For many, it was the first time they’d seen their boss so vulnerable. Tom’s openness set the tone for honest conversation and began to break the silence that often surrounds suicide. Offer Practical Help To The Bereaved Tom and his team knew that actions spoke louder than words. They organized meals for Dave’s family, sent flow- ers, and ensured that coworkers who were close to him had flexible time off to grieve. They also provided informa- tion about local support groups and made sure everyone knew about the company’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP). By offering practical help, Tom showed his employ- ees that their well-being mattered—not just as workers, but as people. Bring Mental Health Resources To Employees Recognizing that the trauma of losing a colleague could linger, Tom invited a licensed counselor to lead a critical incident debriefing session. This gave employees a safe space to talk about their feelings and ask questions. The counselor also provided guidance on recognizing signs of distress in themselves and others, and offered strategies for coping with grief. Tom made it clear that seeking help

Tom learned that real leadership meant not just prevent- ing tragedy, but knowing how to respond with empathy and action when it happened. By embracing postvention, he helped his company move from crisis to community— and from silence to hope. The Takeaway Tom’s story is a reminder that suicide postvention isn’t just about managing a crisis—it’s about transforming work- place culture. By acknowledging loss, offering support, bringing in resources, and prioritizing ongoing education, leaders can turn tragedy into an opportunity for growth and healing. Tom’s company emerged stronger, more con- nected, and better equipped to face whatever challenges the future might bring. In choosing compassion, Tom not only honored Dave’s memory but also laid the foundation for a healthier, more resilient workplace for everyone. Graphic Packaging Becomes A SmartWay Shipping Partner
As a large shipper, Graphic Packaging International sup- ports the transition to low-carbon emissions transporta- tion, which is why the company is now a SmartWay Ship- per Partner. SmartWay includes tools and approaches to track and reduce emissions and fuel used to move goods. With the SmartWay framework, packaging companies can as- sess environmental and energy efficiency as its consum- er packaging products move through the supply chain. SmartWay-certified carriers enable them to reduce emis- sions by an average of six percent and pay less for fuel on our North American transportation. “Being a SmartWay Shipper Partner shows our custom- ers we are committed to supporting their sustainability goals,” said Jeff Zundel, director of strategy, logistics, for Graphic Packaging. “Partnering with carriers committed to sustainability supports our broader decarbonization strat- egy and increases Graphic Packaging’s brand equity.” Decarbonizing Shipping And Transportation Graphic Packaging is working towards achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. It's looking across its operations, as well as its value chain, to find innovative solutions for its commitment to climate action. Its decarbonization plan includes validated sci- ence-based targets for Scope 3 emissions. These types of GHG emissions are not directly generated by its company, but by vendors and suppliers like shipping and transpor- tation. “Scope 3 emissions, also referred to as value chain emissions, often represent the majority of an organiza- tion’s total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions,” said Zundel. “We plan to reduce Scope 3 emissions 30 percent by 2032 by focusing on the most significant contributions to CONTINUED ON PAGE 30
