Summary of the Week: Students will learn about the structure and purpose of government. They will understand why we have government leaders. Students will learn about the roles and responsibilities of government leaders on the local and state levels. Standards: N/A Teacher Background Knowledge: A government is a group of people who lead a community. Government leaders are authority figures in the community. They are elected or appointed by members of a community. Government leaders have specific roles in the community, state, and nation. These individuals provide leadership to keep the community running properly. Notes for Teacher: ● The sequence of articles in this week is designed to build and support the learning of concepts for students. ● For the lesson “Government,” you will need to gather images. See the lesson plan for a list. ● The Poster Pal activity “Let’s Take a Vote!” will be used in the “Voting” lesson. ● The articles “State Government” and “Local Government” will be taught together. ● There is an extended reading article online titled “Making Decisions.” This article can be an extension of the “Voting” article and lesson plan. The Poster Pal activity “Making Decisions” will be completed with this article if you choose to do so. Essential Question: Why do we need a government? Learning Objectives: ● Students will be able to discuss what a government is. ● Students will be able to explain why we need a government.
