Summary of the Week: Students will be introduced to the concept of location, specifically, relative location. They will learn words that can be used to describe relative location. Standards: N/A Teacher Background Knowledge: Location tells us where a place is. There are two types of location: relative and absolute. Relative location is used to describe the location of something, using other places or objects. Certain terms can be used to describe relative location. Some of these terms include “over,” “under,” “near,” “far,” “left,” ”right,” “behind,” and “in front.” Notes for Teacher: ● The sequence of articles in this week is designed to build and support the learning of concepts for students. ● For the ”Relative Location” lesson, you will need a puppet or an object to move around the room. ● The articles “Relative Location” and “Location Words” will be taught together. You will be using the Poster Pal chart “Location Words” for this lesson. ● For the “Describing Relative Location” lesson, there is an option for an extension activity. For this activity, you will need to make a scavenger hunt beforehand. The instructions for this activity are found at the beginning of the lesson plan. ● You will be using the Poster Pal activity “Mapping My Classroom” in the “Mapping My Classroom” lesson. Essential Question: What is relative location? Learning Objective: Students will be able to describe the relative location of people, places, and objects. “I Can” Statement: I can describe the relative location of people, places, and objects.
