Summary of the Week: Students will learn what history is. They will develop an awareness of primary sources. Students will begin to understand how they can learn about history through the use of primary sources. Standards: N/A Teacher Background Knowledge: History is everything that has happened in the past. We learn about people and events when we study history. Historians are people who study history. Primary sources are sources created by people who witnessed an event. We can use primary sources to learn about events in history. Notes for Teacher: ● The sequence of articles in this week is designed to build and support the learning of concepts for students. ● As you work through this week, have a variety of sources available for students to see and touch. This is a great opportunity for students to work with different types of text and information. ● The articles “Historians” and “I Can Be a Historian” will be taught in the same lesson. You will be using the Poster Pal activity “Asking Questions About History” during this lesson plan. ● The articles “Primary Sources” and “Types of Primary Sources” will be taught in the same lesson. For this lesson, you will need examples of primary sources, including pictures, videos, letters, and objects. There is an optional extension activity in this lesson. Consider extending learning of primary sources by having students bring in a picture or object that tells a story about them. Allow them to share with the class and talk about their primary source. ● The Poster Pal activity “Let’s Be Historians!” will be used with the lesson plan “Learning About History.” ● You will be referencing the Poster Pal activity “Asking Questions About History” in the “Learning From Primary Sources” lesson plan. Essential Question: How can I learn about history?
