Present Essential Question to Class: ● Present the essential question, learning objectives, and “I can” statements, using student-friendly language. Clarify any questions that students have about the content and learning objectives. ● Have students preview the text to identify the vocabulary words for this week. Unpack the weekly vocabulary, as appropriate. Article 1: History Word Count: 14 Vocabulary: history: what happened in the past High Impact Teaching Strategies: Worked Examples, Multiple Exposures Lesson Plan: 1. Begin the lesson by telling a story about when you were in kindergarten or another story from your past. Use the word “history” when you tell the story. 2. Write the word “past” on the board. Review what was learned previously about the word “past.” Give the students time to share something that happened in the past. Ask: a. What is the past? (everything that happened before today) b. What is something that happened to you in the past? (Answers may vary.) 3. Read the article together as the students follow along. As you read, have the students highlight the words “past,” “people,” and “events.” Discuss the article and how these words relate to history. 4. Show the video “Introduction to History - K.” Have the students listen to how the video defines history. Stop at timestamp 0:13. Ask: a. What is history? (anything that happened in the past) 5. Show the rest of the video. Have the students listen for events in history that the video discusses. a. What events in history did you hear about in the video? (man on the moon, Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech, family history) 6. Reread the article. Discuss that history is everything that has happened in the past, or before today. History tells us about people. It tells us about events that have happened. 7. Have the students look at the images on the cover of the student edition. a. Explain that these images are events in history that the students have already learned about or will learn about in a future week. Have the following discussion about the images. (Answers will vary, depending on the image.) i. Did these events happen in the past? ii. How do you know? iii. What clues did you use? iv. What is happening in the image? 8. Show the following images, included in related media, and ask the same questions as above. a. Image: “Landing on the Moon” b. Image: “Disney World ® Opening” c. Image: “Ruby Bridges” 9. Explain that all of these events happened in the past. They happened in history. History | Week 23
