23.7 10.Have the students brainstorm a list of things they have done or seen so far this year in school, such as activities, holidays, field trips, lessons, guest speakers, assemblies, etc. Make a list on the board. Ask: a. What things have we done or seen so far this year in kindergarten? (Answers may vary.) 11.Go through each event on the list. Have the students show a thumbs-up or a thumbs-down to indicate whether they think these things happened in the past. Ask the students how they know that. Explain that all of these things happened in the past. They are in your history. 12.Give the students the time to explain to their partner what history is. Encourage them to use the following sentence stem: a. History is __________. (what happened in the past) 13.Have the students think of their favorite event on the list. Give them time to share the event with a partner. Have them use the following sentence stem: a. In the past, our class __________. I liked this activity because __________. 14.Give each student a copy of the graphic organizer My Favorite Event. Model this activity for the students before they begin. Differentiate the activity, as needed. Some options include only drawing a picture, or drawing a picture and sharing responses to the sentences orally. a. Students will choose an event from the list and fill out the sentence frame. b. Have the students illustrate the event as they remember it. c. When they are finished, have the students walk around and look at which events in their kindergarten history their classmates chose. Materials Needed: Graphic organizer My Favorite Event
