map look familiar? Is this a place you recognize from memory? Is this place new and unfamiliar? Locate the compass rose to determine what the orientation (position in space) is. Look at the scale. Is this a map for accuracy or illustration? Look for general features on the map, such as geographic landforms, human characteristics, or political boundaries. Next, generate questions from your first scan concerning what you want to learn from the map. b. Second Look at the Map: This time, look for details that can answer the questions from your first look. Take note of details, such as geographic features, the names of places, the distance between locations, coloring or symbols, and others. Answer the questions you asked after the first look. Do the answers from the first round of questions create more questions? c. Third Look at the Map: Focus on specific details to answer questions. To help focus, block sections with your hand or a piece of paper. This will give your eyes just one place to look. Then move to another section and do the same. Start comparing what you are finding with what you already know. How is this information the same? How is this information different from what you know? Take time to answer the questions while you compare the two maps. Share what you have learned from the map, either with a friend or in a writing assignment. Use the process for each map. Then, compare and contrast how they are the same and different. Reflect and share what you have observed from studying the maps. 8. Distribute the graphic organizer Types of Maps. 9.
