Tell students that they’re going to take a closer look at how the Constitution can be changed. 3. Ask students to circle the word “amendments” in the text. 4. Read the text independently or as a class and underline the definition of “amendments.” 5. Ask students to underline important facts about amendments and amending the Constitution. 6. Watch the video “Constitutional Amendments and Equal Voting Rights.” 7. Explain to students that there are 27 amendments to the United States Constitution. The text discusses four important amendments that were added in the 1800 and 1900s. 8. Assign each student one of the following amendments to research and summarize (remind student that they learned about the first 10 amendments to the Constitution in week 20 “Foundations of Government and Law”): a. 11th Amendment: Suits Against States b. 12th Amendment: Elections of President and Vice President c. 13th Amendment: Abolition of Slavery d. 14th Amendment: Citizenship Rights, Equal Protection, Apportionment, Civil War Debt e. 16th Amendment: Income Tax f. 17th Amendment: Popular Election of Senators g. 18th Amendment: Prohibition of Liquor h. 20th Amendment: Presidential Term and Succession, Assembly of Congress i. 21st Amendment: Repeal of Prohibition j. 22nd Amendment: Two-Term Limit to Presidency k. 23rd Amendment: Presidential Vote for D.C. l. 25th Amendment: Presidential Disability and Succession m. 27th Amendment: Congressional Compensation 9. If students need additional support, choose one or two of the amendments listed above and work through the information in a whole group setting.
