1. Begin the lesson by giving each student a sticky note. 2. Write the phrase “The White House” on the board. Ask students to write down five things that come to mind when they hear the phrase “The White House.” 3. Have students place their sticky notes on the board and create a list of student responses. 4. Show students the image “The White House in Washington, D.C.” from related media. 5. Explain to students that the White House has changed tremendously since it was first built in 1792. 6. Have students read the article individually, with a partner, or in a small group. 7. Give each student two copies of the graphic organizer Timeline Activity. 8. Students will create their own timelines, using the information from the article, adding cause and/or effect information for each event from the timeline. 9. Have students review their timelines with a partner and discuss the cause-and-effect situations they recorded. Article Assessment Questions: 1. What electrical change happened while Franklin D.
