Present Guiding Question to Class: Present the essential question, learning objectives, and student “I can” statements. Have students preview the text to identify the vocabulary words for this week. Unpack weekly vocabulary, as appropriate. Article 1: Globes (taught with “Maps”) Word Count: 68 Vocabulary: globe: a 3D model of the Earth High Impact Teaching Strategies: Explicit Teaching, Structuring Lessons, Multiple Exposures Lesson Plan: 1. Show the students a globe and a map. Tell them to put their thumbs up if they recognize these. Ask: a. What do we use these for? (Answers will vary.) b. Do we use them for the same thing? (Answers will vary.) 2. Show the video “Maps and Globes.” 3. Read the articles “Globes” and “Maps.” Show the map and globe again. Create a Venn diagram, and have students describe the differences between a globe and a map. 4. As you model the Venn diagram, have students complete the graphic organizer Globes and Maps Venn Diagram. 5. Direct the students to the illustrations in the article. Have them draw a circle around the picture of the globe and put a box around the picture of the map. 6. Have the students highlight the main ideas of the two articles and circle two supporting facts. They should add any new things they learn to their Venn diagrams. 7. Have them put the Venn diagram into their interactive notebooks. 8. Have students make a geography vocabulary flipbook.
