Article 3: Reading Maps Word Count: 26 Vocabulary: map tools: things that help us read and understand maps High Impact Teaching Strategies: Explicit Teaching, Questioning Lesson Plan:
1. Show the students various hand tools, such as a hammer, screwdriver, pliers, etc. If you do not have access to the tools, use images. Have a discussion about how these tools work and how they make it easier to get things done. 2. Read the article as a class and draw parallels between the concept of hand tools and map tools. This may be an opportunity to give students a differentiated explanation of “metaphor.” For example, explain the comparison between how tools make it easier for a carpenter to make a table and how map tools make it easier to read a map. 3. Show the students images from related media. Ask the following: d. What map tools do you see? How do map tools help us? e. How are they similar to the hand tools we looked at? f. What would you know about the map if we took all the tools away? 4. Have the students look back at the student edition and highlight the titles of the articles ”Scale,” “Compass Rose,” “Title,” and “Legend/Key.” 5. Ask students: How do the title and the legend/key help you read the map? (Answers will vary.) Ask: What evidence did you use to get that answer? 6. Tell students that in the next few articles, they will learn about other tools that help us read maps. Article Assessment Questions: 1. What do map tools help with? a.
