Article 4: Legend/Key (taught with “Title”) Word Count: 17 Vocabulary: legend/key: explains what the symbols and colors on the map represent High Impact Teaching Strategies: Explicit Teaching, Questioning, Multiple Exposures Lesson Plan: 1. Show the students a key, such as a house key. Start a discussion based on the question “What does a key do?” Tell the students that they are going to learn how a map key or legend helps unlock the door to understanding a map. 2. Watch the video “Using a Map Legend - 2nd.” 3. Ask the students: “What does the title of a book tell you?” Tell them that maps have titles, just like books. 4. Read the articles “Title” and “Legend/Key” as a class. 5. Have the students look at the legend on the political map. Ask: “What does the author of this map want you to know about the map?” Use the legend/key to identify the symbols on the map. 6. Draw a quick sketch, creating a map of the room. As a class, create a legend to go with the map. Include symbols for desks, windows, the rug, the door, books, etc. Include a title. 7. Invite the students to complete the graphic organizer Map Key. 8. Have the students glue the graphic organizer into their interactive notebooks. 9. Have them add an image and a definition of “title” and “legend/key” to their flipbooks. Article Assessment Questions: 1. What does a map’s legend do?
