Article 9: Physical Maps Word Count: 31 Vocabulary: physical map: shows the location of natural features High Impact Teaching Strategies: Structuring Lessons, Questioning Lesson Plan: 1. Have the students look at the map image in the article. Ask the following: a. What do you see? b. Why do you think the map has different shades of color on it? c. What do those colors remind you of? 2. Read the article to the class once, then do a choral reading with the students. 3. Revisit the map image in the article. Ask: “What do you think those colors represent now?” Have students complete the following and answer the accompanying questions: a. Put a circle around where you see mountains. What are those mountains called? (the Rocky Mountains, the Sierra Madre Mountains, the Appalachian Mountains) b. Color the Great Lakes blue. What direction are the Great Lakes in the country? (northeast) c. Put a triangle around the Great Plains. What are the Great Plains next to? (the Rocky Mountains) d. Underline or point to the map title and ask the following question: “What kind of map shows natural features?” (a physical map) 4. Invite the students to complete the graphic organizer Many Maps. Have the students share their answers with the class. 5. Have them put the organizer in their interactive notebooks. 6. Have them add an image and a definition for a physical map to their flipbook.
