Article 6: Creating a Budget Word Count: 82 Vocabulary: budget: a plan for how we spend money that we earn High Impact Teaching Strategies: Collaborative Learning, Multiple Exposures Lesson Plan: 1. Pair students up to review what they have learned during the week. Ask: What do we use money for? Have them discuss what they remember. (Answers will vary.) 2. Have the students read the article and highlight the answers. (spending, saving, investing, donating, needs, wants, etc.) 3. Ask students to look at the images and tables that go with the text. Have them discuss how those text features help them understand the article. 4. Have students reread the text. This time, have them explain the word “budget” to their partner. 5. Review students' ideas as a class. 6. Using the “money” they earned during the week, have the students create a budget using the My Budget graphic organizer. The instructions will tell them that they have to spend a certain amount for food and shelter. They can decide how to use the rest of their money. They don’t have to fill in every section. 7. Have them glue their budgets into their interactive notebooks and turn the money over to you. They can take their piggy banks home for future use. Article Assessments 1.
