Next Step PT. How Posture Affects Back & Neck Pain

Are you one of the first people online to get the newest and latest iPhone? Under your Christmas tree do you always find some new gadgetry or electronic marvel? You don’t? Me neither! By nature, I’m not into technology. I resisted getting a cell phone, and once I did I then resisted getting a smartphone. I even kept my old smartphone while 4-5 newer generations already came and went. Does this sound familiar? Technology is a great topic for me to talk about because I struggle with this one. What I’m hoping for is that by me preaching about how important this is I will hopefully get the message myself.

Why should we be staying up with the newest technology?

INSIDE : • 6 Benefits To Good Posture Why is technology so important? You might be surprised where I’m going with this. I’m not advocating that everyone needs to run out and get the newest versions of the iPhone, iPad, or iWhatever. early adopters and they HAVE to get something ASAP. It’s part of who they are - that’s not us. What I am suggesting is that you change your technology based on two criteria. The first and most obvious one is that if you think your old technology or old way of doing things doesn’t work very well. This is a no brainer. If your 1998 Del computer takes 40 minutes to open up an email - it’s time to get a modern computer and reap the benefits of modernization so you can do what you want much quicker. If you write your to-do list down on a piece of paper but always lose the paper after 2 days then get an app on your phone or use the calendar in the phone. While those examples make a lot of sense, I think there may be even more important reasons to “go with the flow” when it comes to technology changes.

6 Benefits To Good Posture

Maintaining good posture can have a dramatic improvement on your backorneckpain, health, energyand thewayyou lookand feel. Some of the perks of good posture include: 1. Constant exercise for your back and abdominals. Holding good posture takes effort and makes you use the muscles in your back and abdomen properly. 2. Itgreatly improvesyourbreathing. Goodposturemakesroomfor your lungs tofunctionat theirbest–rather thanbeingcompressed when you hold your body in a slouch. Good lung function has a healthy impact on all aspects of your body’s functions and helps to reduce pain. 3. It protects your organs, bones, joints and muscles. Holding correct posture reduces unnecessary strain and pressure on these body parts. Most neck and back problems develop from poor posture over time. 4. It prevents arthritis. With poor posture, unnatural pressure is placed on your joints, leading to wear and tear. This in turn can lead to arthritis. Good posture gives your joints the chance to function at their best. 5. It helps you use your muscles more efficiently. With your bones and joints incorrectalignment, youare likely tofeelmoreenergetic since your body will require less energy to move about. 6. It can have a dramatic impact on the way you feel. When you hold yourself in good posture, rather than a slumped one, you send signals to your brain that make you feel happier and more confident. It also changes the way that people see you – you’ll appear more confident and assertive. Makingsimplechanges inyourdailyhabitscan improveyourposture and reduce your pain. Why should we be staying up with the newest technology? (Continued From Outside)

Longevity and mental function can greatly be influenced by technology. I’m not talking about the actual technology (which actually can do these things too) but I’m talking about the process of adopting any new technology into your life. So what exactly am I talking about? We know that as we get older we tend to get stuck in our ways and tend to resist change. The problem with that is that the rest of the world is making the change, but we’re not. Take the computer as an example. I have patients (you know who you are) that do not own a computer. Wouldn’t even know how to start it if they had one. What are these people missing? They

are missing opportunities to connect with the rest of the world. Family, loved ones, long lost friends. Facebook, for example, has become a huge meeting ground for people ages 55-75. And that demographic is continuing to grow. Yes that means that you have to buy a computer and even worse it means you have to STRUGGLE to learn how to do everything - but if you look at the research we know that people with strong socialization activities as we age tend to live longer than those that don’t. Say what you want about using the computer to socialize as opposed to an old fashioned phone call but if you want to interact with your grandkids

and be a part of their life you better learn how to do so. Chances are they aren’t going to adapt older technology to suit you. And here’s the added bonus: We also know that people who challenge themselves by learning new skills or new technologies tend to have better cognitive skills as they age. What fun is it to live a long life if your brain is mush? The bottom line is that we should all try to keep up with the times - as hard as that may seem to be. It’s never too late to start. And in conclusion, since everyone is now going to jump onto Facebook, please find us at Next Step Physical Therapy, then like us and follow us (ha ha).
