1. Review previous learning about resources. As you review, assess understanding and give feedback. Reteach, if necessary. 2. Have the students locate the title of the article. Read the title together. Point out the images associated with the article. Have the students use the pictures to determine what they think the meaning of “natural resources” is. 3. Read the first sentence of the article. Discuss the first sentence. Explain that many resources that we use come from the Earth. These are called natural resources. Natural resources are physical characteristics of a place. Natural resources tell us about a place. 4. Read the remainder of the article. Make a list of the natural resources mentioned in the article. Guide students to use the images to demonstrate understanding of the text. a. What natural resources did we read about in the article? (water, air, minerals, plants, and animals) 5. Discuss each resource on the list and how it helps living things to survive. Use the Poster Pal activity “Natural Resources Web.” As you go through and discuss each resource, give the students the opportunity to write or draw on the web how each resource helps us to meet our needs. c. Explain what minerals are. Minerals come from nature; humans do not make them. Minerals can be metals. We need minerals to have healthy bodies and to grow. We get minerals from the things that we eat. Plants also need minerals to be able to grow. i. Discuss some of the foods that minerals are found in: 1. milk and dairy 2. fruits and vegetables ii. How do minerals help us to survive? (Answers may vary.) d. How do plants help us survive? (Answers may vary.) e. How do animals help us survive? (Answers may vary.) 6. As a class, brainstorm more natural resources that help meet needs and wants. Write them on the board. a. What do we get from Earth’s resources that help us meet our needs and wants? (Answers may vary.) a. How does water help us survive? (Answers may vary.) b. How does air help us survive? (Answers may vary.) 7. Show the Poster Pal activity “Natural Resources Web,” and discuss what you wrote/drew in each circle. Give each student a copy of the graphic organizer Natural Resources. a. Have the students draw a picture of each resource listed and write what we can get from that resource. Give the students the option to work independently or with a partner on this activity. b. Have the students glue the graphic organizer into their interactive notebooks when they are finished. Article Assessment Question: 1.
