Before the lesson, prepare a small area of the room to be a store. This does not need to be elaborate. a. An extra desk can work as a checkout counter, with a cardboard box for a cash register. b. Print and cut out the Game Money included in related media. c. Classroom supplies can serve as items to buy. d. Sticky notes can be used as price tags. e. Reusable or plastic bags can be placed in the area for the students to “shop” with. 2. Review what was learned in the previous lesson about goods and services. a. What are goods? (things that people buy) b. What are services? (work that one person does for someone else) 3. Have the students locate the title of the article. Read the title together. Write the word “money” on the board. Give the students time to share everything they think of when they hear the word “money.” Write their answers around the word on the board. 4. Explain that, today, students are going to learn about why people use money. 5. Read the article to the students while they follow along. Have the students turn to a partner and tell them why people use money. (to pay for goods and services) 6. Discuss the article.
