By Planning for the Future LEAVE A LEGACY
someone has to prove your wishes? What about Mom’s beloved jewelry or Dad’s watches? Don’t forget about your proudest possession: your home. What will happen to it after you pass? Comb through your belongings and have conversations with family members to see if anyone wants these items. Next, consider your financial assets like investment accounts, bank accounts, and life insurance. Do you have a trust or beneficiaries listed? Does your trust specify who gets what? Don’t forget about essential decisions while you’re still alive. If something happens to you, are your Power of Attorney documents in place for your loved ones to make health care or financial decisions? Did you check with your bank to ensure they accept the documents? And are you sure you’ve chosen the best representative?
Though this is the first time I’m appearing on the cover of our newsletter, I’m not new to Mattson Financial. I’m Laurel, Gary’s daughter, and I’ve been with the firm for nine years. Having spent almost a decade with many of you is something I’m proud of and do not take lightly. Our clients are my favorite part of this job. I love talking with you, learning about your retirement dreams, and helping our team guide you to accomplish those goals. Our primary focus this year is your legacy. We’ve already hosted First Friday events with estate planning attorneys and other after-life planning professionals in 2023. We aim to provide you with more resources to decide what your legacy looks like throughout and after your life. These are big and difficult conversations, but we encourage you to have them so you can make conscious decisions about your health care and financial advocates as well as who will receive your property when you’re gone. After all, your family should focus on a lifetime of memories during their time of grief, not create rifts over inheritances. Some people struggle to understand why any of this matters. They think, “I don’t care what happens after I’m gone.” But by planning,
you give your family a gift of certainty about what you wanted and prevent fights and estrangements. It’s an unfortunate fact, but money makes people funny!
Problems can also arise while you’re alive. This past year, my uncle appointed two of us as his Financial Powers of Attorney. His primary bank, a large national financial institution, refused the paperwork, while a small community

bank accepted it. We suddenly found ourselves battling to gain access to the funds he needed. I’m fortunate to be in this industry and know how to navigate the situation, but it still felt stressful. So, let’s prevent problems before they happen. First, look at your physical property and determine who will receive what. If you have a car or cabin, is it designated to pass to someone directly, or will it go through probate, where
Thinking about these matters isn’t always easy, but we want to make it as comfortable as possible. We look forward to our John Ball Zoo Legacy Event on Aug. 11, where we’ll discuss these issues. We hope you and your family will join us. Your legacy matters, and we want to give you the tools you need to create it. So, mark your calendars — an invite will be coming your way!

A WORKSHOP OF W MAKING KIDS’ DREAMS COME TRUE
What do you get when you combine goofball builders, a grumpy boss, and kids with wacky ideas? In Netflix’s 2022 reality show “Making Fun,” experts actually create high-concept, nonsense inventions that children dreamed up! The result is a playful and educational show that’s perfect for all ages. “Making Fun” follows Jimmy DiResta, a master builder, and his misfit band of “makers” as they bring children’s imaginative creations to life. The team members know their way around a workshop and use wood, metal, foam, fabric, and more to create mechanical wonders that ultimately serve no purpose other than to make kids’ dreams come true.
The first of eight episodes in the series follows the crew as they build a dinosaur that spits out tacos. In others, the builders create a pirate ship pizza cannon and a device to fling cat poop. (Remember, these were kids’ ideas!) Throughout the episode, viewers watch as designs are conceptualized and brought to life even as hiccups are addressed along the way. It’s not all fun, though; this show is also surprisingly educational. The builders explain why they use specific materials, the basics of how the machines in the shop work, and how experts make

among the best board games of 2022 and recommended it to fans of other interactive, team-based guessing games like Codenames.
Steam Up: A Feast of Dim Sum Who doesn’t love a food-themed board game? This fun, fast-paced game for 2–5 players, ages 14 and up, comes with a Lazy Susan filled with dim sum ingredients. You play as a Zodiac animal and aim to collect more dim sum than any other players. Instead of fortune cookies, fortune cards help determine your luck! “If you’re looking for a fresh new party game in 2023, Steam Up looks like a real tabletop joy,” GamesHub reports. Steam Up was launched on Kickstarter and, as we write this, is available for preorder and expected to ship soon. Small World Kids ages 8 and up will love this board game, especially if they’re “Lord of the Rings” fans. As Wirecutter explains, “Imagine a game of Risk set in Middle-earth that didn’t take as long to play as rewatching all of the ‘Lord of the Rings’ films would. That’s pretty much the experience of Small World, an area-control game filled with elves, dwarves, and halflings, among others.”
Wavelength Not only is this game perfect for playing with your whole family (ages 5 and up), but it also actively encourages conversation! Up to 12 players can split into teams and use hints from their peers
When you sit down to play, you choose a band of magical creatures and a power, then set up your “empire” and battle the other players for land and gold. At the end of 60–80 minutes of strategizing, the richest player wins the game. common items. Unlike most reality shows, there is no time crunch. The builders take as long as they like to build something that makes them proud. Jimmy’s crew also provides plenty of entertainment. Graz tells bad jokes, and Derek is capable but clueless. Jackman, the engineer, provides technical know-how. And you can count on Canadian Pat to work wonders with a lathe while being very strange. The group regularly mocks each other, and the editors frequently add funny songs or graphics to the scenes. “Making Fun” involves some potty humor and censored swear words, and not all parents appreciate Jimmy’s gruff (though likely scripted) demeanor with the kids. The show is generally appropriate for children ages 8 and up, but it’s also fun for older kids and adults. Gather around the TV for a laugh and a new sense of what’s possible with the right tools. 3 HOTELS TO VISIT FOR A GREAT NIGHT’S SLEEP
If you’ve ever planned a vacation, you’ve probably picked a few key places to visit, like a museum, restaurant, or historic site. However, a new vacation trend is becoming increasingly popular: sleep tourism, where a traveler plans their entire vacation to get the best quality sleep during their time away. Before, common goals for vacations were to eat delicious foods, stay up late to see the sights, and fit in as much activity as possible. However, this left travelers completely exhausted. And as our culture continues to understand how important sleep is to our health, more people are prioritizing rest even while they’re away. But being a sleep tourist is about more than going to bed early and ensuring you get your recommended eight hours of rest. It’s about building your vacation around sleep. Some
hotels even offer rooms tailored to sleep tourists, with amenities so popular that their sleep options have become regular offerings. So, if sleep tourism sounds like something you’d be interested in, here are three hotels that help you catch those z’s. Park Hyatt New York (NYC): This hotel features a “Sleep Suite” designed by Bryte, a company that uses AI to facilitate sleep. The room touts an intuitive “Restorative Bed,” which adjusts to relieve pressure points and controls climate temperature throughout

The Cadogan, a Belmond Hotel (London): This hotel offers a “sleep concierge,” which boasts prerecorded sleep meditations and a pillow selection menu for every type of sleeper. Sleepers can even benefit from the hotel’s weighted blankets, scented pillow mist service, and their proprietary sleep tea.
Zedwell (London): The first ever “sleep-centric” hotel, Zedwell uses recycled materials to
insulate every door, wall, and floor from sound. This hotel also purifies the air within the hotel and fills every space with ambient lighting.
