Article 1: Empires of North America Word Count: 645 Vocabulary: N/A High Impact Teaching Strategies: Collaborative Learning, Differentiated Teaching, Structured Lessons Lesson Plan: 1. Present the essential question, learning objectives, and “I can” statements to students using student-friendly language. Clarify any questions that students have about the content and learning objectives. 2. Have students preview the text and identify any vocabulary terms. Students should record the vocabulary terms and definitions from this week’s publication in their interactive notebooks. 3. On the board, write “British Empire,” “French Empire,” and “Native American Empires.” 4. Ask students to work with a partner to make a list of information that they know about each of these empires. They should include prior knowledge acquired from previous weekly publications. 5. Review student responses to the activity and create a class list on a piece of anchor chart paper or on the board. 6. Explain to students that this week, they will continue to learn about the meeting of these great empires and the conflict that occurred as a result of differences and disagreements between these empires. 7. Project the image “Map of North America, 1750,” from related media. This map will be helpful for students to reference during today’s activity. 8. Divide the class into groups of three or divide the class into three groups. 9. Assign each group member one of the empires discussed in the text or assign one of the empires to each group. 10.Give each student a copy of the graphic organizer The Studies Weekly Cornell Note-Taking Method. 11.Have students read their assigned section of the article. While reading, students should complete the “Note-Taking Column” on their graphic organizer. 12.If students are working in groups of three, have them present their information to their group members. While each group member is presenting, their peers should add information to the “Note-Taking Column” on their graphic organizer. If students are working in three larger groups, they should present the information to the class and complete the same step as above. 13.After all students or groups have presented, students should work with their group to complete the remaining sections on their graphic organizer. 14.Review student responses as a class and provide any feedback needed to clarify the information.
