High Impact Teaching Strategy: Questioning Lesson Plan: 1. Read the article.

2. Give students graph paper and have them mark a 10x10 square. The square represents the land the Ohio Company bought for $100 at $1 a square. Have them mark the large square into smaller, 2x2 squares. Each of the four-square boxes represents farms the Ohio Company sold for $10 a square. This is called a “subdivision of property.” Have students calculate how many parcels of 2x2 squares will be sold for $40. Ask students to consider the following: a. How much money will the Ohio Company have in profit once the total selling prices are added together and the cost is subtracted? ($1,000) 3. The Ohio Company had no rights to the land if the French didn’t leave. Ask students: a. Why do you think the Ohio Company wanted the French to leave the Ohio Country? (so they could claim it and sell smaller parcels of land for profit) b. What would happen if the French gained full control of the Ohio Country? (The Ohio Company would have been unable to sell the land.) c. What would happen if they couldn’t sell the land? (They wouldn’t make any money and would lose all of their investments.) d. What had to be done? (They had to find a way to force the French out of the Ohio Country.) e. Ask students to provide evidence of their conclusions.
