Article 2: Signers Word Count: 196 Vocabulary: N/A High Impact Teaching Strategy: Collaborative Learning Lesson Plan: 1. Show the picture “Signers of the Declaration,” from related media. Ask students: a. What kind of men do you think the signers were? b. Do you think it would have been hard to sign the Declaration, knowing that it would make you a traitor to England and could cause you to be arrested or killed? 2. Have students look at the article. Ask: How many signers does it discuss? Explain that the 56 signers all had different strengths and talents. As they read, students should look for the talents and strengths of John Hancock, Roger Sherman, and Benjamin Franklin and highlight three facts or traits about each man. 3. Have students share their findings. a. What do you wonder about the other 53 men? (Answers will vary, but examples include: What were their occupations? Did any fight in the war? Were they all politicians? Were any captured or executed?) b. Though they were all different, what do you think they all had in common? What makes you think that? (strong beliefs, desire for freedom, bravery/courage) 4. Have students research one of the 56 signers. Have them use the graphic Independence and Revolution: The Government | Week 23
